So I am in between moving into my new apartment from my old apartment and in the mean time I have moved back in with my parents and Gunther has come with me. He adjusted quickly to his old room, but he started doing something very odd. He has been litterbox trained for the majority of his life and he has free range of all the rooms he has ever lived in. I came home from work today to find half eaten poops on my bed. Gunther NEVER and I mean NEVER poops on the bed! He only poops in his litterbox and on the floor where he naps at times. Also, he sprayed urine at me for the first time. He is over a year old now and has never ever sprayed urine before. He isn’t neutered, and I took him to the vet recently (who specializes in rabbits) and she said that as long as he hasn’t exhibited any unwanted behavior neutering him isn’t entirely necessary, and as Gunther has always been super mellow and affectionate and never sprayed I never wanted to neuter him. Could he just be a late bloomer and now that he’s sprayed once this is going to be a constant thing? Why is he suddenly pooping on my bed? Any answers or guidance would be amazing!

I have a bunny who was a VERY late “bloomer”. I’d had him for a year, and he was fully adult when I got him, so he was no spring chicken when he suddenly started to pee and poop on my sofa + took to courting my dog. Nothing I did would stop him, he positively pestered my dog ( a german shepherd, very kind but she obviously didn’t appreciate his courtship), so after 1-2 months of this I had him neutered. It took a few weeks, then his troublesome behaviors stopped.

There’s no telling of course if Gunther’s spraying and pooping will be a constant thing. You have to wait and see, block off the bed for now and see if he perhaps settles down after your move. If he doesn’t, neutering him is probably the best option if you want to get rid of his sexual behaviors (spraying is a form of courtship.)

He looks alarmingly cute on your avatar!

thank you! He’s really the sweetest! Was your bunny affectionate with you prior and after the neuter? Gunther always kisses me and wakes me up in the morning I’m just worried that he is going to become lethargic and he’s going to stop being all affectionate if I neuter him

My bunny is a slow learner, I’ve noticed, so he hadn’t become very affectionate towards me when his “bad” behaviours started. He then gradually became more and more affectionate, Now he’s a bona-fide cuddler =) As for lethargy, he was lethargic both before and after his neuter, with an outburst of sexual frenzy at the time for his problematic behaviour, so I think laziness and a tendency towards lounging most of the day is more like his “true” personality.

My other rabbit was neutered younger and he’s like the poster-child for affection and love towards his mummy. He too wakes me in the morning by kissing my ear or cheek or pushing his nose against my hand for pets. He’s all in all a very un-lethargic bunny, you could say. So I don’t think neutering affects affection. At least not in any negative way.

That is so reassuring! So far he hasn’t sprayed after his first surprising moment so I’m keeping my fingers crossed! He has continued to poo on the bed but I think it’s because he’s been napping on it.
