My bun millie has a bald spot forming on her butt like an inch or so above her tail- when you pet it basically chunks of hair come off.

she gets oxbow food and hay, she’s litterbox trained and has free run of my (rather small) dorm room.  she got spayed a little over a month ago and also had some kind of mites (specific to rabbits, apparently); the vet gave me revolution for that; I just gave her the second dose today.

I had thought maybe she was chewing at her butt out of boredom, but that wouldnt explain why the hair comes out on its own, and she has so much room to run I feel like she can’t have any pent up/bored energy.

         any ideas?

also- I think I may have heard somewhere about rabbit blowing their coat out like dogs in some spots- is that possible?

Its definitely possible that its a fur molt. If the skin looks normal (no “dandruff”, flakes, redness) then that’s probably what it is. If so, you should start seeing fur regrowth shortly. If the skin looks at all irritated, really dry, flaky, etc., then it could be mites which usually show there and/or the base of the neck and would be best to see a vet for diagnosis and treatment. Can you post a pic?

While mine don’t get large bald spots, I’ve seen pics where bunnies look downright scary with huge bald patches on their backs. Marlee gets a few dime sized spots at the base of her neck but nowhere else.

When my bunnies blow their coat (or molt) it sometimes comes out in big chunky patches. Sometimes it leaves bald spots. It leaves them looking pretty scruff. But if the skin is healthy looking underneath (no irritation, redness or dandruff), I wouldn’t worry about it. Some bunnies molt in patterns, some molt all over at once. It’s unique from bunny to bunny.
