my bun’s got her pre-spay vet appointment tomorrow and i’m all worked up

reading through these forums hasn’t exactly filled me with confidence about the whole procedure

i’m also worried because my rabbit’s not exactly tame so i don’t know how this is going to go.. i’m going to lure her into a carrier  with raisins – that’s about as far as i’ve got.  i think she’s going to lose her mind when the vet starts trying to work on her

sorry.. i don’t really have a question i’m just riled up and anxious

This is totally understandable. This is a major surgery and recovery can be difficult at best. You probably know these things but I’m just going to throw out some thoughts?

Don’t let them tell you to withhold food and water overnight. Some receptionists don’t know better and give instructions for cats and dogs. Your bun needs food and water right up til you go in and send food, if they don’t have it, to offer when she wakes up.

Have favorite foods or treats available and ready for the return home, like basil, canned pumpkin (though good to get her used to it before you run into trouble) and other goodies. The pumpkin is great fiber, they love the taste and they can have plenty of it. Maybe have some Critical Care on hand in case you need it.

And push for pain relievers to go home with (I think)

To get her into the crate, you can cover her with a towel so she can’t see where she’s going, or put her in rump first…if the raisin trick doesn’t work. l struggle with patience for things like that. “Just get the heck in there!”

Best of luck. I’m not going to tell you not to worry. You don’t have to make yourself sick over it, but you have a right to be worried about the surgery…though don’t sweat the appointment ahead of time. Be prepared to be offered bloodwork. For a healthy young rabbit I’d be hard pressed to have it done. You can decline it. But do what makes you comfortable, though I’m always worried about how UNcomfortable the rabbit is going to be to get blood drawn, but that’s a decision YOU have to make. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer.

Hang in there and all the best!

Megabunny gave you some good advice. The vet definitely should give you some pain relievers for the first few days. Depending on what they will give her while she is there, you may not need to give any more until the next day. She will probably be easier to handle, because most rabbits aren’t very lively in those few days after surgery.

Regarding the appointment tomorrow, some rabbits can be rather subdued in a vet’s office, due to being frightened of new sounds, smells and people, and therefore they may be more docile and easier to handle than otherwise. Although, the opposite can be true too. They can get mad and not cooperate with the vet and vet techs, but they should know how to deal with that.

I hope that the appointment. tomorrow goes smoothly and that your bunny will recuperate quickly when she has her surgery.

As long as the vet sees rabbits regularly and has not lost a bunny from a routine spay and neuter, you are in good hands. Oh, and not withholding food before the procedure! Spays and neuters can be quite nerve wracking (I called the vet 5 times that day to check up on my girl haha) but they are the best thing that you can do for your bun. Keep us updated

ahh.. thanks for all the tips and support everyone

the appointment today actually calmed me down a bunch

the vet i saw is actually one of my fave vets from before but she had a baby and i never saw her again.. (there’s a co-op of about 6 offices in my area and some of the vets cover for each other at different offices and i couldn’t remember her name so i just let it go… when i called my normal office they told me to call a different one cause the dr. there was familiar with rabbits.. and there she was ! oohsohappy)

anyway, she was really relaxed and confident about everything.. handled hopper nicely and was very kind to my dog also (killing two birds with one stone lol)

stressed that i shouldn’t fast her and to send veggies and pellets and hay while she recovers in the office and that aftercare pain killers were MANDATORY (i guess for cats they aren’t?)

she listened to her heart and didn’t recommend any bloodwork or that sort of thing that i had done for my dog because she said she was a fit, healthy, young rabbit and the surgery is scheduled for wednesday :\

.. and megabunny.. the raisin trick did not work at all!! i thought she’d be all over it but i think the fact i used my dogs dirty old soft crate made her suspicious.. luckily she’s dumb and cornered herself pretty quick so i just grabbed her.. she was mad but i think she’ll get over it

Yeah, some people have luck with raisins. Just remember butt first if you can…unless you’ve got her covered with a towel so she can’t see. Best of luck on Wednesday
