so i’m looking into buying hay from a farmer because &@#$ing oxbow and all the other pet store crap costs MORE per kilogram than  my dog’s high end kibble!!! which is so many kinds of ridiculous

there’s a couple i’ve seen online that seem decent.. one’s first cut the other’s second.. which is prefered for rabbits?  i know for horses the second cut is usually preferred because it’s more nutritious but perhaps for rabbits that not an issue?

does anyone here buy their hay from a farmer?

1st cut is stalkier but has more fiber. 2nd cut has thinner stalks, more leaf, and is softer than 1st cut. 3rd cut is generally no stalk, all leaf, very soft. Stalkiness will also depend on when the hay was cut (if the farmer had to delay the 2nd cutting due to rain then it will have grown taller and be stalkier and have more seed heads). Its more what the bunny will eat — bunnies who’ll eat any hay will usually eat 1st cut, pickier bunnies 2nd cut, pickiest of bunnies 3rd cut. 2nd cut is a happy medium.

I’ve had the best luck mixing 2nd cut western timothy with 2nd cutting orchard grass hay.

hmm.. i don’t know if my bun is picky or not.. i only know that she’s psycho

i’ll try the 1st cut hay – the farmer seems nice

it’s $4.50 a bale which is at least 5X cheaper than pet store hay

I think the more cuts the softer it is. So first cut is very fiberous and thick and after that they get softer. It has to do with the season they are harvested.

Go with anything you like, so long as it’s horse quality you can even get hay with some alfalfa in it, any variety or mix is good.

I too went the value rate-I mean I do buy botanical hay for excitement, but I have a 1200lb round bale for their regular hay

(and I guess just to highlight the ridiculous price of hay-the botanical hay is 8$ for less than a lb. The round bale at 1200 lbs was 45$…eep! bulk pays off )

A 1200 lb round bale of hay?! KandK, you are hard core! I’m impressed! If I bought a 1200 lb bale of hay, my hubby would have a huge man fit!

heheh! Dave actually picked it up for me, damaged his truck loading it and everything-very supportive but probably only because I let him keep dead cars all over the property Only fair I get some space!

Sounds like a compromise! I won’t let hubby keep dead cars, get a motorcycle, or get a fancy sports car, so I guess I can live without 1200 lbs of hay. Ahem.

hahah! Our motorcycle discussion went like this

“Sure you can have a motorcycle”
                      “really?”
“Yup but I’m never asking your opinion again before bringing home another animal-I shall do as I please, just as you will”

                      …no motorcycle yet
