My bunny Kraken hates jumping in his litter box. I use feline pine which is wood pellets. I think he might not like the pellets moving under his feet but all of the other litter is so much more expensive and hard to get. If Kraken wants hay, he will either lean over the edge and eat or lean over, grab a mouthful and run like a mad man across the room with hay flying everywhere . He will go in there to pee and most of the time to poop but because he isn’t neutered, he decides to leave little poops other places as well. He also would much prefer to pee on his hay which is super annoying as it wastes so much hay every day. Does anyone have any tips? Should I just give up and get new litter? A would there be a new litter box that would prevent him from eating over the edge and entice him to jump in?

Maybe try mixing on some paper based litter like Carefresh. It will make the pellets move a little less and the pellets won’t make as much noise either.

That’s a good idea! Do you think a litter screen would help at all?

I’ve never tried using a litter screen. I have one litterbox digger and I’ve been afraid he’d break a nail (he’s pretty determine) plus my lops poop so much that we’d probably have poop squished all into the screen. We empty and refill all of the litterboxes every night and hubby says we’re not adding anything else that has to be cleaned! You could search the old posts for info on screens and if you don’t find what you’re looking for you could start a thread on screens to get more posts on experiences with them. I know the BB store sells them.

Do you have a feed store local to you? I buy my hay from a local feed store and it is MUCH cheaper than the bags they sell at a pet store. Because it’s cheaper than buying carefresh or other litters I put a thin layer of the hay over the wood stove pellets giving my bunnies something a bit softer to sit on.

Just a spin on JackRabbit’s suggestion.

I just want to say that Kraken is a GREAT name for a bunny.

MD- I have horses at home so it’s easy to get cheap grass hay that Kraken loves! But I have him at school in the middle of Cleveland without a car so it would be pretty difficult to get to a feed store by bus so I have to get ridiculously over priced pet store hay unfortunately. I might ask my parents how much it would be to ship some of our hay to Cleveland I think using the hay over the pellets would work well because Kraken does love to pee on the hay.

Bam- Thanks! Kraken definitely lives up to his name. We love it!

JackRabbit- Why is it that lops poop so much!! It’s crazy. Who knew such a small thing could make such a big mess!
Thanks for all your advice. I really appreciate it!

I’m also in the Cleveland area. Wilson Feed Mill on Canal Rd in Valley View is no more than 20min from downtown Cleveland and you can get a huge block of hay, enough to last probably 6m if your using it in the litter as well as for for food, for about $20. Well worth it. I keep mine in a large plastic bin and only buy it once every 8m or so

I have used litter boxes with and without a grate. When we had a box without a grate, we put a thin layer of hay across as MD suggested, and that worked well at keeping things clean and together. But I have also found a really great system for a box with a grate. A few years ago I bought a “large” rabbit cage (a living room one on wheels) that has a grate in it. We added a hay box at one end and their bowls at the other. The nice thing about this is that it keeps all the mess and accidents inside, so all you have to do is clean up one box and that’s it. To help the pan last longer (this cage isn’t cheap I have to admit) we cut open 13 gallon trash bags to use as a liner. Every other day we pull the pan out, pick up the bag, and drop it in the trash. Occasionally some liquids can get under the liner, but there isn’t any litter to cake the urine onto the pan with, so we are no where near needing to replace it. We also added an exercise pen by clipping it to either side of the cage for when we need to keep them contained.
