My lops are big hay eaters and water drinkers while Kieko is the opposite. For the past several months, all of my bunnies have been eating a mix of SPS orchard and 2nd cut timothy hay. Last week I hot a new box of SPS 2nd cut timothy, a box of KMS bluegrass, and a box of KMS 3rd cut timothy. I used these plus a little SPS orchard grass hay when I made up my “go to” hay boxes for the week.

For the last several days, the lops have been drinking about twice their normal amount of water — they’ve been emptying 2 24 ounce bottles plus a little of the refills! They’ve also been peeing more, eating even more hay than usual, and pooping up a storm. The lops already eat at least their body size in hay.

Could the new hay just be drier and be causing them to drink that much water? Nothing has changed with Kieko.

This is gonna sound weird, but did you taste it?

Taste what? The hay or the water? What am I looking for by tasting?

The hay. See if it tastes salty.

I just tasted all of them and to me the KMS bluegrass tastes a tiny bit salty where the others don’t (but it was the first one I taste). Hubby tasted that one and said he doesn’t taste any salt at all. I do think it may be a touch drier?

If it tasted salty, would that be bad?

No, but if they tasted salty then that would help explain the sudden thirst. If the hay is really dry, it might be to them like putting cotton in our mouths is to us. Does it seem drier?

A little, but all the hay is dry. I didn’t chew it up, just sucked on it a little! The bluegrass was probably at least 50 percent of the mix in this week’s go to boxes.

Yeah, hay is usually dry so it won’t get moldy. I read that it can have up to 20% moisture though.

That’s without the use of preservatives.

The M&Ms have done this before, just have never emptied both bottles. I might change the mix when I do the boxes tomorrow and see what happens. Marlee is getting black tips on her fur which usually means she’s getting ready to shed heavy and Moshi always follows so it could be that too.

Hmm, that could be a contributing factor.
