I know some people around here have/have had hammys. I would like some information on caring for them please. Thanks!

I guess after resolving no new bunnies, we must add from another species?!?!

What sort of information? Diet, living arrangments, food,? I haven’t had a hamster for a while, but I can try and tell you some basics:
First off, generally hamsters can’t live together because they will either fight, or breed QUICKLY.
IMO you need (from what I remember):
You’d need a large roomy cage with lots of hidey-houses, tunnels and toys.
A good quality diet with fresh fruits/veggies/greens.
Hamsters teeth grow constantly, so things for him/her to chew.
            Exercise time,
            Vet care.

Hope that halped some…I’m not exactly sure what you were specifically asking for…!

Yes, what specifically would you like to know? I had quite a few hamsters when I was younger.

Rats, JR! You’re onto me! Yes…we stopped by the pet store before grocery shopping….aaaaand, yeah. We an adorable “fancy hammy”. I have never had a hamster in my life. We got him a cage that has expansion ability and a bag of hamster feed. We also got an exercise ball.

So I need to know everything! Lol. What can be shared supply wise with bunnies? Best bedding? What fruit/veg? Habits? Are they as mouthy as bunnies? What about handling?

Haha that should do for now.

My hamsters were always extremely tame. I got them used to being held by rewarding them every time they were taken out of the cage. They would get a special treat exclusive to that occasion.

As a teenager I owned a rat, Earnie! Does that count?
He was so lovely! I saved him from the Science Dept. at High School.
BUT, I didn’t know how to care for him properly – I saved him, but he didn’t have the life he should have, due to my ignorance. He was so wonderful and tame. I wish I did more for him….. sad face. He spent most of his time in a large glass fish tank – I cringe! I hate that about myself.
Is this why I love BB so much? Everyone looks after ALL their pets so wonderfully.

You still need a smack BM (lol!), but good for you! A wonderful, loving new home – so lucky!

Hmmm, AH is upset because somebunny pees on her bed and her house gets messy. Son and daughter both getting married which means the possibility of grandchildren. Anybody want to remind AH what children do?!

I also have a hamster so if you have questions just ask. They are a bit like bunnies in the sense that they take a while to get used to humans, our hamster Freddie was a terrified wee guy and it took us a long time before we could hold him. We started off just giving him a treat and petting him so he got used to being touched, eventually we could hold our hand out and he would start to show interest even putting a paw or two on our hands, now he will just jump on if he is in a good mood (Freddie is the grumpiest, but cutest wee hamster). what type of hamster do you have? Syrian hamsters tend to be the friendliest towards humans, but not other hamsters you absolutely must house them alone! The other breeds are usually a little harder to tame but can live in pairs.

Like bunnies hamsters teeth are always growing so they need lots of things to chew to wear them down, a lot of rabbit wood chews are suitable for hamsters. They particularly like to dig and/or hide so toilet roll tubes are good because they can hide in them and chew them. Freddie uses a chewed up toilet roll tube to add to his bedding, we have to give him one every time we change his cage. Wood shavings are the norm for the bottom of their cage and for inside their house (if they will leave it there, Freddie refuses to sleep in his wee house he takes all the bedding out and puts it in a corner and makes a bed there instead) there are lots of beddings you can get, do not use the ones that look a bit like candy floss (I don’t know how else to describe it) hamsters put everything in their cheek pouches and this type of bedding can do massive harm if swallowed. if you use a paper based bedding for you buns you can probably use it for your hamster too.

A lot of the veggies you can give to buns you can also give to hamsters, just remember they need a much smaller amount (a tiny amount really) of veggies. they also hide and store food so make sure any veggies you give are gone by morning or take them out yourself or they will go rotten. Freddie particularly likes cucumber, broccoli and kale but there are lots of veggies they can eat here is a link that might help: http://www.southernhamsterclub.co.uk/new/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=71 you will see on the list that hamsters can also eat lots of other things, including hard boiled eggs, I have never given Freddie an egg because I don’t like them but I definitely wouldn’t give a hamster a whole egg its too much and would get left and go smelly. Dog biscuits are good for their teeth and a good source of protein but make sure there is no garlic in them if you can get them where you are Boneo biscuits are great but check they are not the ones with garlic.

You can get x-pens for hamsters but please remember they are good climbers, vertical bars only! I saw a review on amazon once where a lady complained that her hamster escaped from an x-pen, it had horizontal bars so it was her own fault really but boy was she mad! you get lots of cool toys for hamsters, Freddie has a sort of castle thingy that he can climb in and on it has openings at different part he can get in and out of, its quite cool actually.

Ok I think I have written an essay here so I am going to stop, any questions just ask.

He is a fancy hamster. I don’t know what that means though.

Are hamsters nocturnal? He’s been snoozing most of the day, but seemed fairly active last night.

Yes they are nocturnal but they will get up for a snack a few times during the day. I have no idea what a fancy hamster is to be honest I might google that out of interest.

A fancy hamster is just a Syrian hamster who is multi coloured apparently so my Freddie is a fancy hamster and I didn’t even know! I cant say I have ever heard that expression before but when I googled it it was all American websites that came up so maybe we just don’t use that term over here.

                                                              Congrats BM! I love hammies!
First, do you know the species of your ham? The five domestic species of hamster are Syrians, Roboroski dwarf, Campbell’s Russian dwarf, Campbell’s Winter White dwarf, and Chinese. Many rescues and pet stores give different names to Syrian hamsters, such as teddy bear hamsters and panda bear hamsters, but they are all Syrians. It is very important to know what species your ham is, because different species require very different care. For example, Russian hamsters and hybrids are diabetes prone, while Syrians are prone to “wet tail.” Because there are only different species of hamsters, and not breeds, the only mix possible is Winter White/Russian, because of the similarities between these dwarf species. My guess is you have yourself a Syrian. If you post a picture, I could help you. And mostly, I just want to see a picture!

Hamsters need a cage with a minimum floorspace of 360 square inches, although this is still very small, especially for a more active hamster. The most suitable hamster cages are those not meant for hamsters. Many people use a large storage bin with holes drilled in the side for ventilation, while some use large rabbit cages with meshed sides. Hamsters can escape through gaps as small as 1cm, so it is important you use a suitable cage. Aquariums make great, nice looking cages. A 20 gallon long tank is the minimum. I use an ikea detolf glass cabinet with the shelves removed, it is a cheap, large and nice looking cage. Many hamsters like to climb, so I suggest you provide an area with climbing toys such as hammocks and ropes, if your hamster is not a chewer. Levels are great too, but do not add to the overall floorspace. If you have a larger cage, it is best to clean it only once or twice a month because cleaning a hamster’s cage too often can actually lower their immune system.

Many beddings unsafe for rabbits are unsafe for hamsters, such as pine, cedar and cat litter. The best substrate is a paper based substrate such as carefresh. Hamsters love to burrow, so you should provide around 6-8 inches of substrate in at least part of the cage. Hamsters also need a nesting material so they can make their bed, the most common nesting material on the market is called “cotton” or “fluffy” bedding which is VERY unsafe because it can get tangled around limbs and cut off circulation. It also is indigestible and can lead to fatal blockages. The best nesting material is plain unscented toilet paper, it is digestible, safe and warm.
Hamsters, being natural scavengers/forages, need a variety of foods in their diet, and should not be fed on a pellet-only diet. The best way to feed a hamster is with a seed mix, a few pellets, plus fresh vegetables. A good seed mix will have high protein, a good amount of fiber, and a small, but not too small amount of fat. I personally free Stevie on Vitacraft hamster food, which has good percentages, but some other good seed mixes include carefresh complete menu (add sunflower seeds) or Hazel Hamster (Harry Hamster in the UK). As far as pellets, Stevi gets a few Oxbow pellets daily, but some other good pellet brands are Mazuri and Science Selective. Fresh foods are important in a hamsters diet. Most hamsters should be fed veggies 1-2 times a week, unless they have been eating veggies from a very young age, and then veggies can be fed alternating days. Hamsters can eat most veggies that bunnies can eat, with the exception of tomatoes. Lettuce and other leafy greens are great, but just like bunnies they shouldn’t eat onions, garlic, etc. You can also give them other healthy foods, such as a bit of boiled or scrambled egg, a bit of plain boiled chicken or turkey (no beef or pork), a bit of mild cheddar cheese, or whole wheat bread, pasta, or rice. They also can eat yogurt, nuts, fruit (except for diabetes prone species) and oats. These things are very healthy in moderation. Hamsters can eat a lot of foods. If you are in the bird section of a pet store, mealworms and millet are a winner in our house. Mostly, the key is variety.
Toys are also very important, because hamsters are usually up at night, early morning or evening when you may not be able to play with them. A wheel is a must-have. Syrians and Chinese hamsters need a 8-12 inch wheel, while dwarves should use a 6-8 inch wheel. You do not want their back to arch. I recommend silent spinners or Wodent wheels. Most toys sold in pet stores are suitable for dwarf hamsters, but Syrians usually need rat-sized items. Hamsters have ever-growing teeth, so it is nessesary to provide a variety of chews. Dog treats and chews are great, Stevi loves the Greenies toothbrush chews. It is a good idea to take your hamster out for at least 15 minutes a day and let them out. I do not recommend you use hamster balls for any length of time, although they are perfectly fine when used in moderation. I let Stevi run around in my closed hallway.

Taming is a process that you will need to go through when you first get your hamster to bond with them. The most popular method of taming involves sitting in your bathtub with your hamster. You should feed them healthy treats, and repeat this 1-2 times a day until your hamster is comfortable with you holding and petting them. Here is a link to a video describing taming in greater detail. http://youtu.be/_qwxJLw7l24

Freddie (my current hamster) doesn’t seem to like Bramble, maybe he just doesn’t know what he is or something but Bramble will try to play with Freddie and he is just not interested at all and rolls away in his ball. Freddie is completely nocturnal, or he would be if we would let him but sometimes we have to wake him up to clean his cage or something like that, if we let him I am pretty sure he would only wake up for food and nothing else.

I just, it’s cute, and it’s so funny! It’s just running around ya house, you’re sitting there and it casually rolls on by… I cant even. It’s too much. I’m getting excited just thinking about it.

She would also occasionally get a feeder cricket or two. I’ve heard mealworms are fine too. They are omnivores, so a varied diet like LEL described is best. My last hamster actually lived to be 4 years old, so I must have done something right. LOL

From my experience, the balls are fairly safe. You don’t want to leave them in there for extended periods of time though and you want to make sure to block off the stairs. Some of the cheap balls don’t have very secure lids, so that is always something to keep in mind.

The cats are quite taken with him, obviously. They follow him in his ball. But we keep a close eye on him during the day and move him to a closed room at night so they can’t bother him. I know in a few days they will adjust and he won’t be so fascinating lol.

Like bunnies. They have like 4 bunnies together, but can I convince Obie to like hazel? Nooooo! Although, when we got Hazel, she was with 2 other bunnies, all of them getting older. I guess there was some problems with fighting. Probably why she was free, the little delinquent! Lol

The petshops will separate them out by gender. Plus I have seen an older hamster by itself, probably because all of the others it was with before were sold and they wouldn’t get along with new ones.

He was a ball of fluff. He had long puffy fur. I think he was called a Teddy Bear hamster. The people at the pet store said it was ok to have a hamster and ferrets in the same house. We never planned to have them interact. They really pushed us to get an aquarium and set it up as a house since the habitats they sold were small. So he had a great set up. We usually put him up high on something when we weren’t home. We had an escape artist ferret. We went somewhere once and forgot to put the hamster up and came home and found him dead under the couch where one of our ferrets loved to hide socks. Poor baby. We never got another hamster. I wished we would have had ours longer.

Freddie actively looks for treats now at dinner time and will happily let us pet him until we give him a treat (usually I just give him a bit out of his food or a veggie, not anything sweet or not too often anyway) he has this one bit of his cage he goes to to wait on a treat in a sort of meercat pose, its really quite cute.

So, not clear on how often to clean his cage. I admit his cage is probably a tad small, but it has options for tubes and such, so it seemed good. Anyways, is once a week about right?

yeah about once a week is fine, you will know if he needs changed out more often than that – hamster pee smells a lot worse than bunny pee.

Freddies cage has lots of tubes and stuff too, its what they like because its their instinct to tunnel.

Don’t get discouraged if he is not friendly at first, while Syrian hamsters tend to be more friendly towards humans than most of the dwarf breeds they will still take time to get used to you just like any other animal coming into a new home. some take longer than others, but you will get there. He is just getting used to his new environment at the moment. one thing you can do that sounds a bit weird but does work is get a bit of toilet paper and put it against your skin for a while, such as in your bra or the waist band of your trousers. leave it there for a good while then take the piece of paper and put it in the hamsters cage, it gets him used to your smell and its totally fine if he eats it, in fact he probably will or at least shred it up into bedding for himself.

I would experiment with different things to see if you can find something he REALLY likes. Kirstyol made a good suggestion too.

Tonight we managed to convince Elvis to go from his cage to his ball, so we wouldnt have to grab around for him. Then he went from his ball to my husbands arms and climbed around, then plopped back in his ball. It was cute! I have to admit, I’m nervous holding him since I’ve dropped a hamster and he got away. But my husband is great with him.

Don’t feel bad. My mom traumatized a hamster when I was a kid. We had just brought him home and my mom was trying to get him from the box he came in to his cage. She picked him up and he literally popped out of her hand like he was a bar of soap. He flew through the air and hit the kitchen floor. He actually skid along on his back on the linoleum before coming to a stop. He was just sitting there, stunned. My mom was horrified. He ended up being fine though. Hamsters can actually fall from a seemingly great height for a little furry creature and take off running without missing a step. In the wild, they will actually jump off of things and their bodies are pretty compact and made to withstand the impact. Sort of like frogs, maybe? LOL Of course, there is a limit to how far they can fall. Or if they land wrong, they could get hurt. So it’s a good idea to avoid dropping them just in case.

I always wondered if he had a bad experience being picked up in the pet shop or something because none of my previous hamsters have had a problem being picked up but Freddie hates it for some reason. I guess they are all so different.

I was laying on the couch when the bunnies started freaking out and they cats were racing around the room. When I flipped on the lamp, one cat was peering under the footstool. Sure enough, there was Elvis looking rather confused! Apparently when I set his cage in the room for the night, the lid came loose. I’m grateful for the cats watchful eye, but am also glad all they did was follow him!

Freddie got out once, I knew something was wrong because I hadn’t heard him rolling about for a few minutes and he never sits still when he is in his ball. You would think he would want to run away or something but he was found in ten seconds or less, sitting about three feet away from the ball innocently washing his face (he washes his face a lot). I bought a new ball thinking that would help and a week later the same thing happened! touch wood its not happened for a while but I am definitely cautious of his ball now just in case so I keep an eye on him when he is out.

Turns out he was chewing the bars on his cage and got his nose wedged. I was so shocked out how loud such a little guy is. He’s fine, though.
