So Kraken my holland lop bunny has always been thirsty. We got him in August and he was being kept outside in the heat so we figured that he drank so much because of that. However he is still drinking a lot, definitely less than before but still a lot. He did go through some stress over the holidays of traveling and new people so there is that. However, I realized that he drinks about 250 ml overnight and he is only 3.5 lbs. He has great littler box habits, I see no sludge in his urine, and he is definitely a good eater. He loves his hay, pellets, lettuce and apple sticks. He just seems enthusiastic about everything that goes in his belly He has been to the vet last month and she gave him a clean bill of health but didn’t do any blood work. I thought I should ask your opinion and see if anyone has any experience with enthusiastic water drinkers! Thanks so much!

Do you use a water bottle or a bowl? If you use a water bottle, not much water will come out at a time so they’ll need to stay there a long time to get their fill of water. Also, in my expierience water bottles tend to drip a lot. I had one that If I didn’t set it up *Just* right, it would drip so much It could loose all of it’s water in around 12 hours.

Also keep in mind that some rabbits just need more water then others. Temperature can also effect the amount they’ll drink. When it’s hot my rabbit will drink much more then when it’s a little chilly. Hope this helped a little.

I hope I’ve got this right . . . 250 ml is about 8 ounces. My lops are 3 lbs and 4 lbs and have 2 24 ounce bottles. They drink just under half of each bottle on average every day so about 12 ounces per bunny per day. Some days more, some days less, and usually depends on how wet their salads were and how much hay they ate (they eat ALOT of hay!).

I agree, depends on the bunny.

BTW, they drink alot more than Kieko and I had bloodwork done last summer to make sure there were no problems.

JR— Your buns are making me worry about Moxie’s water intake! She’ll drink like max. 4 ounces a day, and thats when my room gets warm. Although I really wet her greens, (so it’s like a veggie soup lol!) and try and trick her into drinking more…The vets have never seemed worried about it…Now I’m going to have to start tracking her water intake everyday!

Moxie — don’t worry, each bun to its own. Kieko doesn’t drink much water either. I just make sure her salads are wet.

Thanks guys. I use a water bowl and total in a day Kraken drinks about 12 – 16 oz. I’m thinking he is just a big drinker but I think I will talk to the vet at his next appointment about getting his blood work done. Silly bunnies always making us worry!

Bramble doesn’t drink much most days, he also barely drinks during the day he seems to save his thirst for night time which makes no sense to me since that’s when he gets his greens so you would think he would be less thirsty then. he is a funny bunny. I asked my vet about it when we were there after he didn’t eat or drink for nine hours one day and the vet said that some rabbits drink lots and others don’t, as long as they are peeing as well as drinking its not a worry.

Some days my buns drink a lot, some days much less. I’ve read that bunnies, on average, consume more than twice the amount of water per kg of body weight than cats or dogs.

Kirstyol — that’s exactly what Kieko does. She gets her wet salad in the late evening and does the majority of her drinking overnight (she also does most of her hay eating right after her salad too).

JackRabbit – It worried me when we first got him because I would very rarely see him drink but I have decided it is just the way he is and he is healthy so its clearly not doing him any harm. He will occasionally take a day time drink but its not very often, if he does he seems to be sitting there drinking for ages and I always wonder why he lets himself get that thirsty instead of taking a drink sooner, but its clearly just the way he is. He drinks quite a bit overnight and he is absolutely fine health wise. I guess they are all just different, just like we are. I cannot eat a meal without a drink to go with it, the other half will eat his whole meal then have a glass of juice or whatever, I guess bunnies are just like us, all different.
