being a new bunny mom, I’m going to have a billion questions! I have already learned so much from binkybunny! I got Loki at a pet store, which I’ve heard may not be the smartest choice, but I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him! anyways, I’ll be bringing him to the vet soon, because of course the pet shop didnt know how old he was, or even if it was a male or female. I’ve heard that males tend to mark their territory more than females, and anytime Loki is out of his cage with me, he pees on me every single time. it’s happened about 10 times, until I realized it’s not a good idea to pick them up out of their cage. so I’ve been leaving the door open in hopes that he’ll venture out eventually. I’ve had Loki now for 2 weeks. he’s a lionhead bunny, and my dilemma at the moment is I’ve realized his bedding (carefresh confetti) is getting stuck in his fur, causing knots. I’ve been brushing him everyday, and trimming the stubborn knots. I’m wondering if there’s anyway to AVOID this problem entirely? or should I just keep up on brushing him?

My bunnies don’t like pelleted litter, probably because we’ve always used Carefresh Natural and that’s what they’re used to, but may be worth trying for your bunny. Yesterday’s New cat litter is paper based pelleted litter and is bunny safe. Some wood based pelleted litters are popular too but I don’t know much about those. Hopefully some of the folks here who use those will chime in.

Do you have bedding all over the cage, or just in a litter box? It’s advised not to have it all over, because that confuses rabbits as to where they should go to the bathroom. Loki would still be prone to bedding sticking to him in the litter box, but he wouldn’t get as much stuck in his fur as he would if it was all over and he laid in it all the time.

I had a long haired rabbit once, and I found that the pelleted litters worked better, and didn’t get caught up in his fur as much. There are Aspen pellets, such as Aspen Supreme; pine pellets, such as Feline Pine, wood stove pellets (without any additives), as well as Yesterday’s News, which JackRabbit mentioned.

yes I use the carefresh all over his cage! I use Kaytee soft granule “bedding” in his litter box, and he definitley knows where his litter box is. occasionally he’ll poop somewhere else. he prefers to lay where there isn’t bedding… but  I just wouldn’t know what else to put in his cage. he enjoys digging in it though. should I just go really light on the bedding? i’m just worried that if he doesn’t have much bedding.. it will eventually hurt his feet

No it won’t hurt his feet, you don’t need bedding at all!
Take it all out except the litterbox

Yes, definitely don’t need Carefresh all over the cage. Assuming that the cage has a solid plastic bottom, just put litter/bedding in the litterbox and provide some fleece or other soft place to sleep and sit. Most bunnies seem to like lay on the cool plastic sometimes too.

oh wow okay! I just thought if I put a fleece blanket or something down, that he may chew it, and that could be dangerous. he definitley prefers just sleeping and running on the plastic bottom.

You don’t mention your location, but there are woven grass mats available that make nice “flooring” and are safe if bunnies chew them.

I have purchased them at World Market/Cost Plus. Not sure if they are available at their online sites.

They come in squares and can easily be cut to fit cages or runs.

Check out the Oxbow large hay mats. Completely edible, and very comfy!

Have you looked at the items available through the BinkyBunny store? They have the Oxbow hay mats. They also have double-weave seagrass mats that are cushy too, as well as regular seagrass mats that are flat. All untreated and edible.

the feed store where i get my bunny litter recently switched from Terramigo to America’s Choice (both are sold in 40lb bags used as stable bedding because they puff up when you wet them. While Terramigo is about the size and consistency of yesterday’s news, the new stuff is about 2-3x the size,, and it totally eliminated the kick-out mess that my buns would always do (marjorine is the worst culprit). it also stopped the litter from getting stuck in the fur of my satin angoras
