Cookie had her spay today and everything went well but when I picked her up the nurse said that while in recovery she started trying to pull out her stitches so they put on an e-collar on her which of course she hates and I don’t want to discourage her from eating as I know how important it is for recovery but I don’t want her pulling her stitches out over night, does any one have any good idea’s on things to use instead of this that will still stop her from chewing the stitches.

Ooh, that’s a tricky one, I think if I were you I’d keep it on and hand feed her.

I ended up making a soft collar from a sock so she can eat and drink but cant tuck her chin under to get to the stitches, it seems to be working well.

I have another issue though, since coming home yesterday afternoon (it’s mid morning here) she has not touched any food and there is no poop either, I have tried carrots, banana and lots of herbs and I put them right under her nose but she just sniffs them and turns her head away, is this normal? and at what point of no eating/pooping should I get her to the vet?

If she is not eating by now I would definitely head to the vet as she may need subq fluids and some gut motility medication. If you have some critical care on hand I would try to syringe feed at least 10 ml immediately, you can also crush some pellets into a slurry with some water and a splash of apple or pineapple juice. It is very important to get her hydrated and eating at this stage.

Update: I got back from the vets and she said the wound looks slightly swollen and irritated like she has been messing with it so my soft sock e-collar is clearly not working, she gave an extra shot of Metacam and advised I take the collar off while under supervision to see if she will eat once it’s off, I did this once we got home and she went straight for the stitches and will not leave them alone, I checked the wound and she had pulled at least one stitch out but the wound was still tightly sealed arrragh so she is now in a plastic e-collar, I have seen her have a very small nibble on hay but that has been it, still no poop, she said if she hasn’t pooped or eaten by tomorrow she will have to go in and get fluids and syringe feeding, I am obliviously trying to avoid this at all costs as we just dont have the money for an overnight stay and it would be very stressful for her so ill keep a close eye on her and try some mushed pellets in a syrynge later today

If you have some pumpkin handy try steaming and mashing it for her. It will help give her fibre and put someting in her stomach, you can also mix it with the critical care or pellet mash.
Have you syringe fed before ? There is a trick to it. You need to get the syringe in the side of the mouth where there is a little gap between the teeth.

No I haven’t syringe fed before which is why I think the vet didn’t suggest it, I think we might be in the clear now so hopefully I wont have too, she is eating and I see some poops around (thank goodness) she is hating the cone though and I haven’t seen her drink so hopefully she can get water with it on, she goes straight for the stitches every time I have tried taking it off

That’s a bother, I have been lucky so far, only my cats have needed the cone of shame. Possibly because my vet uses a combination of glue and dissolving stitches. She might get used to the sensation after a few days but from what I have seen of other peoples bunnies the cone usually has to stay on for the whole time. Did they give you the soft or hard cone ? There is a floppy fabric one available that seems to be better for bunnies.

unfortunately it’s one of those horrible plastic ones but I cut it down as best as I could so she is able to eat and drink with it on and she seems less bothered by it today which is good, she’s eating more and pooping more too so I think she is out of the woods now.

Last night while I was giving her some herbs she lunged and grunted at my hand something she has never done before (She’s a year old) I am hoping it’s just because she is sore and a bit miserable and not that me spaying her has changed her demeaner

Glad to hear she’s feeling better!

Don’t worry, she’s probably in a bad mood; spays don’t make bunnies turn evil, haha

Awww….it’s just awful when a bun has to wear a cone. I’ve had to deal with it twice. Hope she is well soon and can take it off.

She is doing so much better and seems a lot happier although I bet she would be great full to a few hrs out of her cage but we will be increasing her space very slowly as her litter habits pre-spay were terrible and I don’t want her to get back into bad habits.
