Over the past couple of months, Moshi has started running around humming (hubby says buzzing like a little bee but it sounds like humming to me) when he gets excited at salad and pellet times. Its adorable, but any idea why he just started this? Did he just figure out that he could?! He’s been neutered for over a year, so its not a hormonal kind of thing, he just runs around humming with the occasional binky or head binky thrown in. Anyone else have a humming/buzzing bunny?

Some bunnies are just more vocal and will make noises when they are happy/excited. I agree it is odd he would just start this out of the blue. You would think he would have been doing it all along if he was the vocal-type.

Since he can’t hear (starting to wonder if he can hear a little bit), I wonder if he knows he’s doing it or if he can just feel a vibration when he does it.

Maybe. I always assumed that the fact that Leopold is deaf is the reason he never makes noises.

Funny. Kieko grunts — grunts when we don’t move fast enough, grunts when she doesn’t like something, grunts when she wants out. Marlee growls when she’s angry, usually followed by a thump. All three tooth purr. But Moshi had been quiet otherwise until the humming.

How sweet! At least Moshi knows how to be nice. Oscar is pretty vocal, but all he does is curse (growl) at us. He does it when he wants out in the morning, when we don’t get his food to him quickly enough, or if we dare try to pet him and he’s not in the mood.

The vibration may be exactly it, if he’s deaf.
My parents have a 17 year old siamese that is completely deaf (and half blind), that is extremely vocal. Sometimes when he goes to mew he doesn’t make any noise, other times he’s so loud you can practically hear him on the porch! It’s not due to pain, but simply because he can’t hear himself to control volumes… either way, loud or soft, if you happen to be against him while he’s ‘vocalizing’ you can feel a little vibration as he does it. He probably likes to vibration, but I’m sure that he’s noticed that making the vibrations gets him attention–which is always good.
