I’m looking for ideas on hay racks.  Most of what I found online seems to be attached to a cage.  Ziggy is completely free range.  Right now I’m just putting hay in the corner of the large litter box he uses.  Unfortunately, this means a lot of hay goes to waste from him spreading it out to lay on.  Since I never know what’s dirty and what is still edible, I throw it all out to be safe.

Any ideas are appreciated!  Especially pics if you can.    Thanks!!!!

I’ve never had luck with my rabbits finding any interest in hay that’s in those racks and find they like to pick around their litter boxes for edible bits. The favorite one I saw, though I don’t have a picture, and I threw mine away because I didn’t think it was being used, is where you buy one of those smallish cheap plastic trash cans. It takes a bit of doing, but you can cut a hole at the bottom of one side. You can fill it from the top, and a fair amount will stick out the hole. Does this make sense? Sorry. Thats all I’ve got. I hung that from the side of the pen above the litter pan so the extras could fall into the litter. Again, I just don’t have luck with those rack, but they’re cheap enough to try

My dad is pretty handy and he made me a hay box. Its literally just a rectangular box just shy of 24 inches tall probably and 4-6 inches wide. There is a nice size square as a door that is big enough that my 3.5 pound bunny can and will climb into if I don;t have his grate cover on. This hay box holds a ton of hay and its been set up on Frodo’s cage bottom since I got it. The bottom of his first cage holds his litter box and the hay rack to contain messes. I find this works for him. He keeps things neater (for the most part) and he does not soil all of his hay anymore (most of the time).

If I can figure out how I will post a pic of his set up.(these links might work. They will open on my computer at least)

So I figured out how to post pics. Here is an older one of Frodo’s hay box that my dad made me.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! So far, I have found that Ziggy does not want ANYTHING in or near his litter box. I’ve tried a variety of homemade contraption and it just turns into a toy for him to throw around or knock over. I’ve surrendered to the fact he simply wants his hay in the litter box. However, I have bought a grate for the top and this seems to have stop a large portion of the spreading of the hay. Which I think he may have been doing to cover the soiled litter. Now that the grate is in place, there is no soiled litter for him to have to cover.

                  MY GOODNESS HE’S PICKY!! lol!!
