        Hello guys Happy New Year

I bought my bunny this rag from the pet store she absolutely adores. She loves cleaning it and nibbling it ( dont worry I checked she is not eating it ) but she keeps dragging it down into her bedding where she goes potty and now she has went potty on it and it smells. I dont want to get rid of it because its the first toy she really loves and takes care of. How can I wash this and make it safe for her again? I dont want to put it in my normal laundry because i’m afraid she’ll get sick from fabric softner and such.

        Please and thanks !!

If you are worried about the fabric softner I would just wash it without the softner that’s the only thing I can think of doing.

If you aren’t afraid to touch it (because it’s gross), you could wash it by hand. I’ve never had to wash my bun’s toys because I normally don’t buy the ones like that. But I do have a dog and I usually wash her toys by hand. I’ll rinse it out good, use a squirt of dish soap or laundry soap and massage it into it, scrubbing thouroughly. Then I’ll rinse out all the soap thouroughly (make sure everything’s out!). I don’t know if that helps, but there you go.

That’s a good idea Moxie I didn’t think to hand wash the toy.

I think you’ll be fine however you wash it as long as it’s rinsed really well. I don’t use fabric softener when I wash our bunnies’ fleece, and I also run it through an extra rinse cycle.

I never thought about worrying about any of that! Good question, Brittinay. No extra rinses here. It’s the washer or the garbage. Sorry

I just throw Porky’s blankets in the washer, but we use detergent that is free of fragrances and stuff, never soften and do an extra rinse anyway since both my kid and husband have eczema. Handwashing’s probably better though, getting the hay out of the lint trap is a major pain.

I do a special load of “bunny laundry” once in a while to wash my bunny’s blankies. I use gentle cruelty-free (more natural) laundry soap. Just a tiny drop and wash with warm water. Because I’m paranoid about the soap, I then do a rinse cycle with no soap and cold water. And hang to dry or use the dryer without dryer sheets.

Like LittlePuffyTail, I also do “bunny laundry only” loads, since my bunny loves fleece blankies and has a ton of them. I’ve tried hand-washing them all before, but it doesn’t get them as clean as the washing machine does (sometimes he drags his blankets through his litter box and leaves them there, ew!). I use fragrance free/dye free detergent, and no fabric softener or dryer sheets or anything like that. Even if I do get some weird looks at the laundromat from time to time, it works!
