The humane society that’s closest to me neuters and spays rabbits for 100 which is apparently really inexpensive for it.. I’ve been trying to contact them since Jude turned 4 months and he turned 5 months last Sunday ( the 21st) which is when most rabbits hit sexually maturity and what do you know..they finally called me back that day! He still hasn’t yet I don’t believe but his appointment is for the 15th of January and I have so many questions! I did request pain medication for afterwards but my main question is on his carrier setup for on the way there and back and his cage setup for afterwards. One girl that I follow on youtube set up her rabbit’s carrier with towels lining the bottom of it and hay covering it with treats hid in the hay and a chew toy to keep him busy when he comes to but I was thinking wouldn’t the hay scratch the wound and stitches and irritate him? What is the recommended way to set up the carrier? And for his cage I am planning on taking out the second level which is more of like a tiny deck thing..to give him more room to move around in his cage. I am going to cover the plastic bottom of the cage with towels and hope he doesn’t spill his water bowl even though he will probably spill it a hundred times. I will probably also cover some of his cage with a towel or blanket so it will be darker and the sounds/ changes in lights won’t scare him as much which was recommended by the girl on youtube..anything to add?

That all sounds perfect with the towel in the carrier and cage. For the hay, you can put a couple handfuls at one end of the carrier, although he might not nibble at it at all. For the cage, keeping him on one level for the first week is a good idea. Give a towel, but don’t be too concerned if he pushes it to the side. Buns seem to prefer laying on the solid ground, even post surgery.

Fortunately, boys bounce back very quick. I’m glad you’ve been able to get this scheduled, that’ll be a huge relief! Keep us posted on how he does!

I emailed the humane society that I’m taking my rabbit to some questions since they didn’t really answer or ask any while scheduling the neuter and a lady called me from there just now telling me everything I should know about it including that I shouldn’t keep food from him before surgery which made me feel a lot better about the place since the consent form said that I had to but it was just for dogs and cats. She even said that I could bring some of his food and hay and maybe even a treat in a zip lock bag for him to have after the surgery and until I pick him up around 3. She even explained that I would just have to keep a watch on his stitches to make sure he doesn’t chew on them or anything

Just a funny thing: I am using my boyfriend’s cat carrier to take Jude to the vet Thursday and I decided to simply leave it in the floor with the door open and Jude LOVES the carrier. It is also the carrier that he was transported in when I picked him up from the rabbitry that I got him from but he simply LOVES sitting in it and sleeping in it. He wouldn’t even snuggle with me last night (he’s been very moody..Thursday can’t get here soon enough xD) so I gave him a treat and he took the treat and he grabbed it out of my hand and took it to the carrier to eat it! I joked with my boyfriend that he probably will hate it once he comes back from the vets but I just think it’s kind of strange how much he loves being in the little carrier with very little room when he HATES going in his cage which is about 5x bigger than the carrier.

Rabbits like to feel like they are in a burrow. I suspect you have just provided that, though you likely have a hidey house of some sort already. But who can guess what goes on in those little minds?? Cottontail’s rabbit LOVES his new NIC house, even though he has complete run of the place. So funny

Yes, he actually has a cardboard box that has a hole cut into the front and back of it and tissue paper and old clothes of mine in it to dig in and at first he loved it but now it’s almost like he got tired of it and needed something new

Lol! Aren’t they funny?! He’s probably just hanging out in there bc it’s “new”, or at least he doesn’t remember it! They do get bored from time to time…

Jude’s neuter is tomorrow morning and I am excited but I’m also very worried. I’ve been reading all of the forums on here about how difficult OR easy it is to administer the medicine after the neuter. I’ve read that some people simply hold their rabbit still and kind of force feed the medicine and I’ve also read of the rabbit just enjoying the taste of it.. I read on one of the forums here that someone’s bun hated being force fed and it stressed her bun out so she or he rubbed papaya juice near the opening of the medicine and their bun simply bit on and it made it easy. I would probably instead rub a banana around the nozzle and see if he takes it that way because he LOVES banana. I am going to clean his cage today and sanitize just to be safe and he has a half of a second level that he just jumps up to that is his ‘bedroom’ and I’m going to take it out of the cage just to make sure that he doesn’t go to jump and bump his belly and mess up the wound/stitches. I’m going to cover the bottom of his cage with 1 or 2 towels and he is litter box trained but should I leave his litter box in the cage or what? I know he’s going to have to stay in his cage for a while after the surgery even though he HATES being confined to his cage. Just need a lot of advice to get some peace and serenity about it.

I would leave his litter box in his cage where he is used to it… Other than cleaning, I didn’t have to change Pete’s cage too much because he had an open cage that only had one story to it… I’ve heard quite a few people remove the upper levels or block off those levels until they were comfortable with the buns jumping. Peter hates being confined, too…and honestly he didn’t stay confined too long. He did a lot more running and hopping than I was comfortable with at times, but we didn’t have any trouble with the stitches or his poops returning to normal… It sounds like you’ve been doing a good bit of research and have some good plans in place for giving him his medicine. Make sure he has his hay, salads and treats.. and I’m sure he’ll be fine. If you do end up letting him out, just make sure that he can’t easily hop up onto any furniture and keep an eye on him, so you can try to limit the jumping. As for inspecting the area, the only way that Pete would show me his belly was if I waved a raisin over his head, then I could check his belly while he “danced” for the raisin, but it’s good to check it every now and then for redness, swelling, etc.

Okay, thank you! and I’ll probably try that with the raisin or maybe a slice of banana or a veggie treat..he hates being held even though he has been held every day for short periods of time since he was born..he just doesn’t like being too far off the ground.

The pain meds we came home with after spays/neuter were apparently tasty because all three of mine licked the meds right from the syringe. We tried burritoing them at first and all three fought the meds. I was almost in tears and decided to try just holding the syringes in front of the buns. Each one sniffed and started licking — if I didn’t push the stopper in fast enough they would bite the syringe. If your bunny will take the meds this way, be careful because he may try to runboff with the syringe!

Today, Jude was neutered and everything went perfectly. I lined the carrier with a towel..I coaxed him into the carrier by waving a treat in front of his face and then throwing it into the carrier. I dropped him off at the vets office with some pellets in a baggie and was told not to worry and that no rabbits have ever been lost from surgery there and that the lady was very trained in it. Then I went home and my room was very lonely without my baby. I went back at 3:30 to pick him up and he was still very groggy. As of now he has been home for 4 hours and is moving around and eating and drinking just fine. He ate all of his vegetables at once when he usually eats them very slowly and comes back for them later so I gave him a bit more since it can’t hurt. He actually hasn’t fussed once about being in his cage..I guess his own cage is better than the vet’s loud cage in a room of puppies, kittens, and other rabbits XD The vet actually said that Jude and a puppy that was in the cage next to him cuddled through the bars when I explained that he had never been near other animals before..I thought that was kind of sweet. I guess that if he can put up with my 3 year old sister he can put up with anything..lol. He has to take medicine every day for 4 days after today because he already received the medicine for today. For now, Jude is perfectly normal and happy. Will keep you guys updated.

So, yesterday he got neutered and today I had to give his first dose (by me) of medicine. He received the first ever dose at the humane society but I had to give him it today. I smeared some banana onto my finger then smeared that all around the tip of the syringe. He stuck the entire syringe in his mouth and tried to bite it so then I squirted it all at once into his mouth (he’s only on .1 ml per day) He took it just fine. Some of it got on the outside of his mouth but he cleaned his face right after so all that was on his face was also consumed. I also gave him a slice of banana afterwards since he took his medicine very well. He’s only eaten a few pellets but he usually doesn’t eat pellets much anyways..He ate about a cup and 1/2 of vegetables yesterday and has also been munching hay. I tried to check the stitches by holding a pellet above his head and he raised up to get it but I don’t see the stitches..I know this is a silly question..but are the stitches more toward the stomach or the bum? Shouldn’t I be able to see them with him raised up? Maybe they’re clear stitches? They are the kind that absorb so that he doesn’t have to have them removed so are they clear? Either way there is no redness or anything like that either. He looks perfectly fine. Of course he hasn’t been jumping around like crazy like he usually does but he’ll hop from his litter box to food and water to towels as normal. He hasn’t binkied one single time since yesterday morning..He usually binkies about 50 times a day (no I’m not exaggerating! XD) he’s a very happy bun…but now I figure he’s too tired from pain meds to binkie around..

There won’t be stitches in a male for a straight forward neutering

thank you! lol I was very confused because there are obviously no stitches but on the document that they give after the surgery so you can prove your rabbit is neutered has a box that’s checked that says check incision site and stitches daily to make sure there isn’t swelling or redness…and that confused me. He’s taking his medicine perfectly. Yesterday I rubbed banana on the syringe and he took it without hesitation and today I noticed that I have some fresh strawberries that my grandmother is going to bake into a cake so I rinsed a slice off and fed him half of the slice of strawberry and smooshed the excess onto the syringe and he was skeptical at first because he hasn’t ever had strawberries before but once he licked it he LOVED it. No more treats for him today though XD. His poops when I first brought him home were very mushy..but now they look about normal. The medicine (even though it’s only .1 ml a day) makes him very sleepy. I gave it to him 5 minutes ago and he’s already flopped over and sleeping like a baby.

His last day of taking medicine was Sunday so I let him out of his cage Monday morning. He is doing perfectly and is acting perfectly normal. He took the medicine perfectly all four days after his surgery and did very well through all of it. I might even eventually get a new bunny soon (:
