        Hello everyone,

        I bought Teddy to the animal hospital today and got him neutered. It took from 7:30am to 4:30pm. I was so glad that everything went well and that he woke up, but now, I don’t know what exactly am I supposed to do. They injected a pain reliever in him which should last him around 12-24 hours, so they didn’t give me any pain medications. I took him home, filled up his hay rack, food bowl, veggies bowl, and water bottle. It hurts so much to see him limp into his cage because he hurts for him to jump. He sat on his litter box for a little while, he didn’t move at all and I thought that maybe the room wasn’t warm enough, so I went to heat up a water bottle for him. When I came back, he was sipping on just a little bit of water and cilantro. I ran downstairs to do some errands and when I came back up, he has jumped onto the top layer of his cage (it’s his favorite and he only sleeps here). I was so scared that he hurt himself, but he seems okay and he wasn’t bleeding or anything. He just lays in one spot and I knew that he probably won’t want to jump down, so I move the food bowl and the veggies bowl up to the top layer of the cage. His cage is a wired bottom cage and I didn’t want him to hurt his place where he got surgery on when he’s sitting, so I lined the majority of the cage with towels and tshirts. Of course, he kicked the towel in the top layer off because he likes to cooling feel, but I want to keep him warm.

        My question is, he hasn’t eaten much all day…is that okay? Am I doing everything right? Is there something else that I should do? My worst fear right now is waking up to see a sick or dead rabbit…so I’m going to stay up all night today and I’ll be checking on him every hour because I don’t want to bother him, I want him to be peaceful and rest, but at the same time, if I don’t go check on him, I will not feel comfortable…please help me…I don’t want anything to happen to him because my friend got her rabbit spayed recently as well and it passed away the night she bought it home…Teddy seems okay right now, he’s just not making much movement or eating and I’m really scared…Any advice will do and thank you in advance!

          OK. If he was only done today it is likely he will just want to sleep and have very little interest in food. If he has drunk some water and nibbled some greens then that is good. Try to leave him be to relax and rest, check in but don’t prod or disturb him. It’s really better if the boys don’t hop up on anything for the first day or two so can you exclude him to the top floor ? Try to make sure his water etc is in something so you can monitor the levels. The most important thing is pee and poop, you might see some tonight but don’t panic if it’s not evident till the morning. Have some critical care on hand in case you have to feed him in the morning if he has not eaten. Crushed pellets mixed into a slurry will work, you will want him to take at least 10-15 ml. Keep up a steady supply of little amounts of moist greens especially the pungent ones like mint, cilantro, parsley and basil. If the room is a comfortable temperature he probably doesn’t need additional heating, just pop a blankie over one end of his cage so he has some privacy and it will help keep the ambient warmth in.

            If Teddy is litter trained you might want to permanently cover the wire bottom of the cage as it is really bad for their feet to stand on wire. You can do wthis with newspapers, grass matting, ply wood or some soft cotton floor mats.

              How is Teddy doing?

              Neutering is a much less dramatic procedure than spaying, so the risk is much much smaller.

                The thing with Teddy is that, I tried to block the top of the top floor in his cage and he just pulls it down and jump on it because that’s is his safe and relaxing spot, so I don’t think I can stop that. I’m going to leave him in his cage for another day to relax and rest (I will be checking on him from time to time) and then maybe tomorrow, I will open the cage and if he wants to go in his play pen, he can, if not that’s up to him as well. I checked up on him this morning and his body (his ears) is now at the normal temperature again. He ate some of the fresh veggies that I gave him, but he still hasn’t touched his pellets. I did noticed that he did jump down and into his litter pan and he did his business there. His poop seems the same but I’m not sure whether he peed or not. I thought he’s hungry so I placed some hay in a bowl for him and put it next to him and he ate a little of that. He hasn’t drinken any water since a little of it last night, so I placed it in a bowl and placed it next to him and he seems to be drinking from it little by little, so I think he’s doing fine, his face is just blank and he doesn’t feel like moving around a lot (which is normal) but he seems to be able to jump a little without pain. He’s not bleeding or anything like that (which is good). I will be covering his cage with foam mats and towels, but before, he iwasn’t neutered yet, so I decided to wait till he’s neutered and litter trained. He will never let me cover the top layer though, because he likes the cool feeling of the wire, so I’ll probably be covering the bottom layer cause he doesn’t seem to mind that at all. He was litter trained until the hormones starts to kick in, so now I’m going to litter train him again and this time it will be more reliable. The good news is, ever since he is a baby bunny, he will only pee in one spot and that’s in his litter pan, so there’s no accident with him at all. He does leave some poop around recently before I got him neutered. Once he is litter trained, I will be covering up the bottom of his cage. His litter pan is also wire, so he doesn’t step on his own pee or poop (so I think this is okay). He is let out of his cage at 8am in the morning till 11pm at night, so the majority of his time is spent outside in his playpen (which I layered it with fleece blankets because my floor is wood flooring). I’m just really glad that he’s doing fine. Once we get rid of the useless stuff in his room, I will be renovating that room to make his play pen even bigger.

                Oh, I have one more really important question. There’s always one corner of the fleece blanket (that we used as flooring in his play pen) that he really likes to nibble on. He would make a huge hole in the blanket and the bad thing is, he eats the blanket the majority of the time…so I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I need the blankets there, but at the same time, I don’t want him to ingest such a thing. Before the fleece blanket, I had a regular kid’s blanket for him and he ate those too! What am I supposed to do? Once he is satisfied with the hole that he made, he will stop chewing and eating it. Will it expand in his stomach? Should I take him to the vet? He’s been doing this for awhile and I just never got the chance to remember to add it on my post…Please help me!

                  Sounds like he is doing just fine. If he won’t let you put anything over the top of the cage don’t worry. It was just the bottom floor of the cage you might want to cover. Leave the top as he likes it. If he is eating greens and drinking some water he will start on the hay soon. Pellets are usually the last thing they look for. As long as he keeps improving I wouldn’t worry. Pooping and eating is the goal and it sounds like he is doing both on his own terms.

                    Don’t worry about the fleece blanket. Mine have eaten much worse than that.

                      It took Bramble over a week to start eating his pellets again, as long as he is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping I wouldn’t worry too much. Bramble was also very sleepy for a good few days maybe even a week after his op but I think that had more to do with the painkillers he was getting than the neuter itself.

                        Is the flooring if the top level also wire?

                        For any cage flooring, you can put down vinyl tiles or sheet vinyl over wood (even 1/4 inch plywood since the wire would provide support) to give him the cool floor feeling while saving his feet from the harm from wire.

                          Okay, that’s good to hear. He is eating hay, but he’s not willing to work for it, so I put it right next to him so he doesn’t have to reach for the hay rack. He did ate a little bit of pellets but he’s eating a lot of veggies. He’s not drinking as much water as he should though because his poop is really hard and small so he’s kind of dehydrated. He ran out of his cage today into the play pen and he’s not jumping around as much, but he looked like he really wanted to stretch, so I let him roam around for like 5mins and put him back in his cage. Moving still looks kind of difficult for him, so I think I’m going to leave him in his cage for another day, just to be on the safe side. I’m just super glad that he’s doing okay.

                          I’m happy to hear about the fleece blanket because it was recommended for rabbits, but he was just ingesting it, so I was kind of shocked, but it’s been months and he seemed okay and once the hole gets to a certain size, he just stops. I’ll be changing his fleece blanket again (I do it every 2 months) and this time, I’ll make sure that he won’t chew on it.

                          @JackRabbit
                          , the flooring for the top level is also wire and the hard thing is, he does not permits anyone to hold him because we aren’t bonded yet or he’s just super skittish, so there’s no way that I can hold him up to check his paws to see if he has sore hocks or not, but I will be taking him to get his nails trimmed because when he’s in an unknown environment, he’s not skittish at all, so I’ll be able to check then. Like I said, he’s not litter trained so I can’t cover the bottom of the cage yet, but I will once he is litter trained (reliably). About the top floor, I tried foam mat, putting a bed there, newspaper, towels, pedicure tiles, and a wood tile, and those are just bad news to him. He will refuse to go to the top floor, until I take those things out, or he’ll just try to pull it down and I don’t want him to hurt himself. The top layer is really small, usually he just lays there and at night, he would jump up there and sleep or take a nap. Other than that, he doesn’t jump up and down on it and he doesn’t walk around on it (because it’s way too small) so I don’t think that should be a problem. I will definitely cover up the bottom though and the majority of the time, he is outside of his cage running around his play pen, so the only time you will ever see him on the top floor is from 12-2pm (nap time), 6-7pm (rest time), and 11pm-8am (nighty night time). He will never go on the top floor unless he’s going to sleep and it’s not like he sits on his feet or anything like that, he just lays flat on his side and sleep, so he’s not on his feet. Thank you for the suggestion though, Teddy is just a really spoiled and picky rabbit…
