I know a lot of people on here and other sites advise against leash training but I think it’s a good idea. I’m not talking about the stringy leashes that people advice against because if your bunny get’s scared it could strangle them..I’m talking about the vests that snap on with velcro and have an attached leash to the vest. They’re made specifically for guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, etc. and are made just in case the animal does get spooked and freak out the vest simply will come off. I would never take him outside in it. When I move in with my boyfriend (of 3 years) in 6 months he has a cat and I think the leash would help with bonding. Also, Jude (rabbit) and Leia (cat) are the same age and size..Meaning that they would both fit into the leash vest if needed. I might even get two and switch them back and forth so they will be kind of forced to smell the other animal. Opinions are very much appreciated.

I don’t think you can truly leash train a rabbit. I don’t think that is going to help with bonding bunny and cat either – I imagine that once they get used to each other and trust each other that is going to bond them.

I’d imagine that putting a leash on your rabbit would just make him terrified that he couldn’t run away if you tried to bond your rabbit and cat that way. Plus if your animals can get free, it won’t stop your cat from hurting your rabbit.

I feel that anything that restrains a rabbit, despite the type of harness, is just too risky to be worth it.

                Why risk it.

I’ve said it before but I know someone who was very experienced with rabbits and did the rabbit hopping sport. If anyone could read a rabbit’s behaviour and train them well it was her.
Her rabbit got scared and broke his back in one of those vests. She then had to drive him to a vet in that state, and have him put down.

I just can’t say enough that no one should use them -ever.

They make loads of products that aren’t safe for rabbits (or other animals) because animals don’t shop -their people do. It just has to appeal to you, and that’s capitalism.
I think most of us can agree that the *idea* of a rabbit enjoying the outdoors and going for a walk is really cool-but it’s so risky.

KandK — I couldn’t remember who had posted that before but I remembered the story. I had bought one of those harnesses for Kieko, read that story, and never even took it out of the package.

My bunny bonded with 3 dog’s – all free roam 24/7. The only thing I did was make sure Henry had lots of hidey places if he ever became scared…..
It turned out, my dog’s ditch (leave) Henry cause they aren’t overly fussed on him! Ha ha ha haha ha!
No way would I restrict Henry in a time of fear – sorry KMP. I say no toooo! I’ve seen Henry in action (not fear) and it’s enough for me to never consider it. He would hurt himself doing a zoomie and or a binky in a time of joy for him. He zooms everywhere with NO notice! Lol!

And it’s SO fun to watch!

My rabbits when restrained would never bond with any animal. They bond best when they can run and hide if scared. I would perhaps leash the kitty, if you think the cat might take off after a scared rabbit, cause chasing would make the fear worse… but, I would never leash a rabbit and force them to stay in situation that made them afraid.

Hey Kittenmuffinepie- I’m so glad to hear that! Like I said I can totally relate to the idea of taking them on a walk in the sun on the grass. It just doesn’t turn out that way   And beyond the risks, they really aren’t that happy outside in almost all cases.

JackRabbit-Thanks for remembering! It was really heartbreaking when I heard, as I’d known her bunny well. I’m happy to hear the story had impact- I know I never tried mine out with a leash ever again either!
