The idiot trio – aka the dogs – were being obnoxious and refusing to come inside after their last potty break. VERY odd as they’re short coated goofs who abhor cold and wet, and it’s 28° and freezing sleet outside. So I went out to see the issue, figured they’d found an opossum again.

Nope. Two very cold and wet rabbits. The normal earred one is smaller, but didn’t like the dogs near his buddy, and promptly nailed my glove. Thankfully I had grabbed them first, figuring it was an opossum. The sideways earred one however was most pleased to see someone, and let me scoop her up. I know better, but I stuffed her in my sweatshirt pocket and carried Sir Grumpy With Good Reason in my hands. Cleaned the mud off them, gave them some oat and grass hay the rats and soft furred mice play in, gave them a water bowl and bottle, and shut them in the big dog kennel with a box to hide in for the night. They’re both white with pink eyes. Grumpy has kind of plush velvet fur, Not Grumpy has normal fur but the sideways ears.

I’m sure one is a male and one is a girl, but they panic if I don’t let them sit together. We’ll make a visit to the rats vet tomorrow for sure. Crossing my fingers the girl can be spayed or already is. He is not neutered and that will change if they join the idiot pack of critters here.

The local e-vet is not good with small animals, plus is extremely expensive. I do have an ok e-vet an hour away. If there’s any reason they need to go tonight, we’ll head out, but they seem ok if just pretty scared, and I’d rather not drive in the icy fun the roads are becoming. But let me know if I’m missing anything on why we need to go now, they’ve made it this far, I don’t want to hurt them.

The dogs don’t really care much about them inside. Sam was sniffing around because they’re in his kennel, and one of them did some jump or something. It was loud on the kennel floor and the dogs are now giving the kennel a wide berth. Kennel is pretty boring, plain newsprint paper on the bottom, a small litter box with shredded paper, the water area, the shoe box of hay, the hide box, and some plastic fling type balls that were going to be rattie presents, but oh well. Mostly just in the box, but have played a little.

        Thanks!

My husband just got home, so checked the kids out. Both accepted some cilantro and spinach from the fridge, the girl loves kale, and a tiny nibble of apple was approved by both. They’ve flung all the hay out of the box, so refilled that. Seen both drink and seen poop from both I think, the boy for sure since he wants to bless everything, then a pile from where the girl was sitting while eating hay. Both have clear faces and seem ok, if unsure yet. I put the clip on the door latch, they were trying to flip it open. Yeah, I think not. Between not having rabbit proofed anything and the dogs, there will be no unsupervised out of cage time.

Off to bed and then calling the vet in the morning!

I think they will be fine till tomorrow, in fact a quiet night inside where it is warm and safe should help calm them. Maybe a soft towel or fleece blanket for them ?
Just make sure they are eating and pooping. For supplies whilst you are out tomorrow you could get some good quality hay, horse quality oaten hay will do or you can look for Oxbow hay in a pet supplier, some good quality pellets and some fresh greens. They litter train well if they aren’t already. Just line a cat litter tray and fill it with hay or put a litter tray filled with recycled paper litter or untreated wood stove pellets next to the hay box so they can sit in the litter tray whilst they eat. An emergency spay is a good idea if the little girl is entire, it takes boys a full month to be without sperm so if you get him done first and decide to defer the girl for any reason bear that in mind. They definitely sound like a bonded pair and hopefully your girl is spayed. She will need at least 10 days to recover and will need to be on one level, no running about or jumping. Pain meds and gut motility drugs should be provided by the vet for after care. Bunnies should NOT be fasted prior to surgery and should keep their gut active at all times so have food available for before and after any surgery. Mine g to the vets with snack packs. On the home page is a link to bunny care info and within is an extremely good list of dietary needs and things to avoid like potatoes, grains, poisonous plants etc.

REW’s or Lavender eyed bunnies generally have a very sweet temperament. They are so lucky you found them, the poor little mites. Your dogs must be very good to have alerted you and not harmed them. It bodes well for the future as bunnies will happily bond with other house pets.

                Quick update –

Vet says they’re fairly young 4-5 months, but both are in for surgery. Vet says they have been on their own for a while, pretty clear they were dumped to him. The girl is actually just out, spay and had some frost damage on her ears. She also had her front teeth overgrown. Vet thinks her ears will give her the most grief, but she’s got a list of medicine and some “Critical Care” to have. She’s probably an English lop mix per vet, she’s pretty big he thinks for a mini lop.

The boy is getting neutered and he’s getting possible dental work. He wasn’t agreeable to the look see while awake, but vet thinks he’s got something wrong with a molar. He’s a rex or mini rex per vet. I’ll get a better update on him post surgery.

Vet said to keep them in Sam’s kennel, but put the divider in so they both get half for a few weeks. They can get a better set up after. I’m debating just letting them have the room Jack has before he passed, it’s mostly empty now. It’s got a hardware cloth screen door so Jack could see everyone but as a 23 year old cat, not be bothered by the 7 year old cats or the idiot dogs. I’m not sure what makes a good bunny cage so off to research.

Vet sells Oxbow, that’s who the hay is from and the small critter food. So we can add rabbit food easy.

Vet this morning was hilarious. Sir Grumpy was nasty crabby because I split up them, and he ccouldn’t defend his friend. So they’re sitting together in a carrier in the room. Vet tech gets Sir Grumpy being grumpy and calls it good. Vet comes in. Grumpy starts up. Not Grumpy shoves him out of her way and hops over to see her new friend. Sir Grumpy had a horribly shocked expression and came out to stare at me. I think I was supposed to go save his friend. I just scooped him up instead. He’s ok, just scared and very unsure of all this new. His grumpy behavior probably saved them more than once. He’s honestly not that awful if you don’t startle him. The bite was my bad last night, otherwise he’s just very cautious about coming close and likes to box your hands if it’s not his idea. Not Grumpy just isn’t. Everything is just wonderful and everyone is her friend. My husband called her rather clueless.

So we have bunnies I guess, and I suppose we need to find better names.

You are just wonderful for saving this pair and getting them the medical care they need. Poor things were just discarded and trying to make it on their own and now they have food, fixed teeth, a warm bed, a happy safe home, and still have each other. What lucky bunnies!

                    Sounds great Emmi,
The back room sounds ideal. I can sympathise with the previous loss of your Jack, I lost my 24 yr old Twinkletoes a little over a year ago and then my 14 yr old Jebediah to a particularly aggressive cancer earlier this year. They left two big cat shaped holes in my heart.
Mean while, back to rabbitats, home page again, in the rabbit info I think there is a section on housing and examples of custom built indoor mansions using a avriety of materials. Custom is the best way to go if you have the time and tools as you can get it to fit in the space you have available where as ready made cages don’t always fit just right, although they do come with wheels.

Oh, screen doors… They can and, if the are anything like my late Blossom, will chew a hole in flyscreening. It might pay to modify the door by attaching some Xpen panel or something on the lower half just in case they have a chew and get out through the door.

Poor Sir Grumpy has a badly broken molar, so vet took a lot longer to get what was left out. He got an antibiotic shot as a precaution, plus home medicine.

But they’re home, and lay side by side in the divided kennel. I feel pretty rotten for splitting them up, but I’m going to listen to the vet. They look like they feel pretty blah, but doing well. They LOVE the grass hay and had nice big salads for dinner. Ok, two salads because they were throwing their plates at me for refills. Red leaf lettuce, romaine, spinach, carrot tops, parsley, cilantro, a little mint and a few slivers of banana. They ate the Critical Care, but prefer veggies. Nibbled at the pellets, but not fond yet.

The dogs are rather stupid at times, but are good pups. The cats have smacked muzzles so they generally leave critters alone other than being rude and sniffing everyone. But the bunnies stomp and the dogs run off.

I gave them some fleece but both promptly shoved it into corners and want nothing to do with it. Poor kids, they’ll learn what comfort is hopefully.

DH has named them River and Doctor. I agreed if only because he did print off a safe veggie list and bought them a bunch of organic veggies because “They managed on their own, so we need to spoil them.” was his answer to surprise, expensive new critters. Plus, I might be a geek also.

DH also found them those wire cube deals. They’ve got small holes, maybe 1 1/2″ squares or so. Plus a plan, I think from a Michigan rescue? It’s huge, 4 cubes high by 4 cubes tall by 3 cubes deep. I think the original plan was 2 deep but DH wanted a wider version to be more stable. Plus a private “bathroom” 2 by 2 and 1 high, with a coroplast short wall around to keep hay in and a coroplast roof, which is under the window so they’ll be able to see outside. We let them see the small pen, since we could build them each one for a few weeks but both were terrified of the “huge” space so they’ll be cramped for a bit. I’m guessing it’s the prey mind, they’re alone and open space must be scary now.

They do have cardboard Christmas trees right now. Which are being ignored, but we need the festive.

I think they’re adorable, sweet and perfect. I will never get people who think any living being should be treated like trash. Even if you give up for stupid reasons (Sam for example got too big because apparently Great Danes stay small), at least take them to the shelter. Yes, ours has a high kill rate, but a pet isn’t going to survive outside, at least the shelter is a gentle death vs exposure, traffic, a dog, whatever. Doctor is scared and grumpy because he had to become that way to survive. It’s not his fault, he doesn’t know better. A mean critter isn’t going to eventually come over for pets, just move at his speed and he’s fine. River just doesn’t get it and life is just wonderful, so hopefully she’ll help him get over the high fear level he had to develop.

Yeah, I love them already. River is too sweet to not love, and Doctor is pretty adorable on how he must protect his girl. His “Make her get back to me!” stare at me sealed it. It was awful at the vet but he was willing to accept me helping him. Even if I just cuddled him instead. And really, any gentleman who gives up his banana treat to his girlfriend because she didn’t have one yet is a good bunny.

Had a bunny when I was a kid, but we didn’t do much right as I quickly learned on my need bunny help now search. Outside because he was stinky, ate the cereal pellets, didn’t play with him. And we used to wonder why he was anti social and aggressive. Sorry about that little Peter! We were really bad.

Took them seeing us close the latches once to figure out how to flip them, pretty sure pulling them back was going to soon follow. They’ve also figured out the fridge opening, the hay being rustled and that any plastic noise must be food. Doctor found out if he stomps on the plastic floor tray, the dogs will run out of the room in a panic. So if he sees one sleeping, STOMP! Really bud, that’s not nice. Funny but not nice.

Thank you so much for helping us!

Mine have got the cats wrapped around their little fingers/paws. They can even chew on Bilbo’s tail and he doesn’t mind. Bilbo raised my two oops litters and my xmas rescue litter (the rangers dropped them and Pandora, Mum bun, off when they were 4 hrs old). I’m in rescue and part of the committee for WASAR here in Western Australia. I have 7 of my own and two of Pandora’s daughters who will be rehomed soon. Pepper, her husbun Piglet and daughter Pipi have figured out how to open the baby gate. Pandora and her daughters have figured out how to shift the Xpen on their bunny room (Pandora’s staying with me and I am going to bond her with one of my boys, she is very fond of Pascal, that’s where she heads when ever she escapes the bunny room.

Well some rabbit went after the divider until it slipped. I put it back, I got a good stomp series and the divider was promptly attacked. They aren’t excessively grooming each other, just snuggled together. Vet said if they’re that determined, let them stay together before they hurt themselves.

It sounds like the safer option. The current fear of new surrounds might be a blessing for their recovery. If there is no humping, binkying or zoomies going on then they should be fine.

She’s fine, just young I think. Pretty much a toddler hissy fit, I’m not sleepy……… The big kids were all like “Oh thank the Mighty Rabbit, we are all together and it’s warm and dry and plenty of food.”

I may have dragged my camping cot down here to keep an ear out for trouble. River wanted right up, Big Girl decided she wanted up then also and Doctor kept peeking up until I picked him up. Now he’s asleep on my feet with Big Girl and River is by my head. We’re all comfy now.

Doctor is doing well, got another antibiotic shot but that’s more precautionary. I saw pictures of his tooth that was broken, yuck! Vet found a tiny pocket of pus, thus the concerns. Everything looks good now, no swelling, his mouth isn’t excessively tender, everything is nice and healthy pink, no fever. Still waiting for labs to see how he’s doing blood work wise, but vet isn’t worried. He stomped the vet, vet tech, DH and me but didn’t bite or box too much.

River looks fantastic. Tummy is healing nicely, her silly ears are healing. Vet said there was minimal dead tissue, but since a good bit wasn’t coming back to pink, he took her ears back to healthy. May have been able to save more, but not worth the risks to him. Risk of systemic infection and having to repeat anesthesia when she’s not at 100% were the big concerns. Now she’s just got the wide English lop ears at French lop length, and they helicopter out. She chinned everything, gave lots of kisses and flopped out in the middle of the floor. Brains of a Golden Retriever, but she’s sweet.

Idris is back to eating well. Still feels pretty rough, but after several nights at least in wet, below freezing weather outside, at least two litters by vet’s guess, drug here and there by strange humans, and major surgery, I’d feel pretty cruddy myself. She’s a New Zealand Flemish cross or similar per the vet. Otherwise, labs from last night are back and she’s otherwise healthy. Does have a badly healed broken front toe, but doesn’t seem to bother her. We just keep to keep a close eye on her nail since it may need more frequent trims.

Addie is fine and feisty. She needs to explore everything. Why walk when you can binky is her motto. She’s now spayed and home. And throwing everything in her kennel around because she wants OUT NOW! I’m getting frequent stomps and bunny butts as I ignore her demands for freedom. Vet says probably Idris’s daughter with some Californian in there.

All four get along fine, just three want to more/less listen to the vet and enjoy resting quietly and one is a stubborn toddler.

No baby bunny litters won over new phone/camera. They’re expensive little goobers to set up, oh well. Still cheaper than Great Dane knee repair.

Everyone happily demolished all veggies offered, lots of hay, and pellets. Critical Care gets a disgusted stomp, they’ll have pellets thank you very much. Doctor, River and Idris get straight timothy pellets, Addie gets a 50/50 split with alfalfa pellets. Except she’s spitting out the alfalfa pellets half the time. I thought bunnies like alfalfa, apparently not.

Right now, big kids are on the couch with Olli, Addie is in an x pen playing toss games with me. I give up. Quiet doesn’t exist in her world. If one of us sits in here with her, she at least doesn’t do the racing fun or big binky games. She’s bored, but it’s for her own good. Since she loves digging, can she have a soy printed phone book to shred?

But eesh, Addie likes digging. I actually put her in a tote with a bunch of paper about 20 minutes ago. It’s a pile of confetti now. But she’s being reasonably well behaved if she can shred paper.

Yup, found that out with the girls. Doctor like banana, but really, he wanted apple. He LOVES apple and we hadn’t been sharing with him post icky tooth removal, too hard it seemed since he didn’t want carrot or a lot of pellets either. So the girls took naps instead, it was only apple after all, and Doctor took 30 minutes, but got up to Olli and gently put a paw on his arm. Then got to take a big bite of apple. So he promptly leapt off the couch to eat without anyone possibly stealing his apple.

Then, sniff/eek, he was so happy, he started doing little binkies! Ok, I’m thrilled you are happy, but no binky games yet! He didn’t get any real height and only two at least. I got a good stomp after I flipped him over to check his incisions, they look good.

You did not throw it away did you!”
