        Strangest thing last night..

Perdi and I enjoyed a long brushing session, in which I was able to get her backside pretty well.  This in itself is big news since we have only been together for about 6 days and her previous owners were less than attentive.

So, as the brush would fill I would clean it out and set the fur aside.  There was a nice little ball by the time she was done with my attention.  As I set her down and went to clean up, she raced over to the ball of fur and has nibbled up half of it before I could grab it.

I have read other posts and she has plenty of hay, and (finally) a balanced diet.

        Has anyone else experienced this???

Oddly, this happens more often that people would think. Not necessarily eating the fur that was just brushed off of them, but I’ve caught mine munching on tufts of fur they pulled out themselves.

I’ve caught Marlee doing that. The first time I caught her, she had a big old tuft of fur hanging out of her mouth and was just munching away. You would have thought I’d taken a treat out of her mouth the way she looked at me when I took it from her. Funny thing was, instinct kicked in and I held my hand under her chin and said “spit it out” before it occurred to me that I was speaking to a bunny and not a child!

Is your rabbit sprayed? This sounds like nest building behavior. One of my females had a false pregnancy and was building a nest even though she had not been with a male.

I didn’t think this sounded like nesting behavior. My boys do this.

If she had been grabbing the fur and hiding it somewhere that could be considered nesting behavior, but if that’s not the case and she was just eating it, then that’s probably just bunny instinct saying; “look, something that smells good. Eat it.”
Bunnies can’t cough up hairballs or anything, so I feel like this isn’t very safe for the bunny, but I can’t think of why a bunny would do that
