Dinky has hardened thick fur around her hocks, small bald patches and she has started to limp slightly on her back leg. Are sore hocks the cause?

Her hocks don’t look too sore but they are slightly pink and there is slightly coarser fur on her back legs.

Should I take her to the vets to get a better opinion? How much has it cost anyone to get them sorted out? Is there anything I can do right away to relieve any pain she may have?

        Please help!!!!

Oh the poor thing. I think a trip to the vet would be great if you can swing it. But maybe someone will jump on who actually knows something about this. Rates are all over the board, so fee quotes are tough. Sorry I’m no help. Just up late and saw this and I hope you get answers. I wonder if the vet will need to shave, unless you think you can work off some of the mats, but I’d be worried about tearing the skin. It’s pretty tender back there. Best of luck. Let us know!

I think sore hocks is something that we wouldnt be able to treat ourselves. It requires bandaging of the sore area carefully that you might not know how to do right now. As for the ointments, I think Neospirin (minus the pain reliever stuff), Calendula cream and Mupirocin will help. I dont know if they prescribe oral medications for it. Till you take her to a vet, make sure she doesnt get on any wet or harsh surface.

Pink, hard callouses are normal. If they become red, inflamed, cracked and/or bleeding you need to see a vet. The limping concerns me, however, and I would def have a vet check it out. It may or may not be caused by the hocks.

              What is her flooring/housing like?

We have had her hocks treated, they were only a tiny bit inflamed in reality when we looked properly during treatment, we are now regularly wiping her back paws to ensure that no urine is staying on them and aggravating the skin on her hocks as she seems to have sensitive skin around her hocks. The limping i think must have been cause by something completely different. We have changed her flooring to soft matting to help the sore hocks not return!
Shes a lot better and only has soft pink patches where the sore patches used to be
                Thank you for helping!
