So…Our humane society took in TWO HUNDRED AND ELEVEN rabbits on friday-details on the seizure aren’t being released yet (maybe charges are pending) …

I was there on Saturday for bunny cuddle and incidentily found out about the seizure minutes before I left to go to the HS. I saw the bunnies, so I found a supervisor to beg to help. So, according to her the only thing they were really in need of was some early am help with cleaning/feeding and maybe some toys (another employee said they also were almost out of quikstop), so after doing bunny cuddle with the adoptive bunnies (not the new ones that were seized) I raced to the petstore and bought more toys then I could afford-all the ones in that store-really not enough though!! I went Sunday am and helped clean cages, so I got to handle alot of the rabbits-they all are put in pet carrier boxes while you clean the cage.

They are all beautiful!!-Tons of harlequins, there is some lionhead in alot of them-one holland lop and one californian (?)-Gorgeous the lot of them!! They are easy to handle (and not becuase they are sick, malnorished or anything like that) they just seem to be used to being handled for some reason! There are quite a few in the back in vet care, and some mothers with young litters I didn’t see.

I emailed the coordinator as one of the supervisors said they needed foster homes for pregnant mothers and I JUMPED at the chance *fingers crossed* that I get to foster some mommies and babies!! I’ll keep you guys posted on that, and also on the story as more details are made public!

Yikes, did these appear to be pure breds?  Might this be a seizure from a back yard breeder?  211 is alot of rabbits from one place, this has to be either a hoarder or a breeding operation that got out of control.

I believe it was a hoarder-not accidental and not a breeder…Nope they appear to be mostly mixes, but there are some pure breds. Gorgeous all of them! Definition of irresponsibility is the person who allowed it to happen…

The rescue I help with dealt with a hoarder – I was lucky enough (not) to be her main contact and she definitely had some mental issues. Luckily her family stepped in and contacted various rescues and we were able to help these rabbits – it took us about 4 months to be able to take them all in. She really could not see what she was doing, it was very upsetting to all of us involved in helping these rabbits. I just hope her family is watching her closely now to see that this does not happen. She really did need some intervention from her family to help her.

oh that is so sad.  obviously for the poor bun buns but also for whomever was hoarding if at all like the situation sarita mentions.  there would have to be mental issues involved for it to get to that state i would think.  it’s more than just pride / embarassment when over 200 buns are involved.  i hope you hear from them soon k&k… you’re an angel to help out so much!

Since you live in a no pets apartment aren’t you afraid to bring in more animals? I know you mentioned that in your bonding post.

                        What Sarita said.

Although helping out buns is always a blessing, you always, ALWAYS have to consider your situation first. It would be terrible if the sudden increase with mom and babies to your current brood would wind up miffing the landlord so much that you get evicted. Then trying to get a new place with all those buns will be next to impossible.

It’s the only reason I don’t foster buns from Save a bunny – anymore and I risk losing the ones I have.

                          Whoops
…Actually I do live in a no-pets apartment, buuuut legally because they told us we could have rabbits when we moved in I am technically allowed (so no worries about eviction-I did consult with a lawyer when we first moved in-also getting my bunnies registered as ‘therapy animals’ asap so there will never be a problem )

                          BUT…

My parents just retired and are out of country (I think they are in New Mexico right now) until late June/early July and I asked them before they left since I’m looking after their house, could I foster any animals short term and they begrudgingly said if they didnt’ know about it….

So, any foster bunnies I’d keep at my parents house for that period of time ( a bonus since I don’t want strange bunnies around mine, disease transmission etc) . I still haven’t heard anything (our HS is a little slow to respond, but I have my bunny cuddle tonight so I’ll bug them *in person*….I was thinking that I’d pretty much be giving up my trip to mexico I’ve been planning since there’s no way I could get someone to look after my three and then my foster responsibiilites as well (not to mention in two locations!!)

I read a bit more about this situation on Rabbits Online.  Out of the 211 bunnies seized, 130 survived   Many had to be PTS because of injuries and health problems.  This shelter normally adopts 100 rabbits per year, so they are totally swamped by this.  A local rabbit fancier’s assiciation called EARS (Edmonton Area Rabbit Society, http://www.edmontonarearabbitsociety.com/ is taking the lead in trying to arrange supplies, donations, housing and foster sites.  Maybe you can contact them about fostering a mom and kits?  There is a little information on the shelter website here http://www.edmontonhumanesociety.com/cgi-bin/section_switch.pl?section=other&sub=News%20Rabbit%20Update, which gives slightly different numbers than the person on Rabbits Online gave.

I am in contact with EARS (I have a couple of friends who are on the board) but so far they aren’t fostering any, as they say HS doesn’t want them to have any (their guess is that they are mainly breeders…). I’ve seen a couple members popping in to check on them, healthwise and bringing in toys and stuff. Technically HS is no kill, only PTSing when injuries require (or temperment as applicable with dogs)…

It’s bugging me a little bit that the numbers seem to be different every time I hear them!!

I saw a bunch last night when I went in to do my cuddle program and will probably be in this weekend to help clean and do an extended cuddle session…The volunteer coordinator finally contacted me and said at this time, they aren’t looking for any foster homes…We’ll see how it works out and I’ll keep you guys posted!

yeah they probably have to wait til the court case and the judge is made a decision on where the buns will stay. I was looking up animal hoarding online just last nite. mental illness is involved and a lot of times they don’t see the filth and dead or sick animals as a normal person does. yes with hoarders is sad for the animals and them usually the premises is so nasty it need to be torn down poor buns. glad they are out of there. so sad

Has there been any update on the bunnies at the shelter?

Yes, actually there have been ALOT of adoptions…I am assuming because of the press coverage. I’ve talked to alot of people who were looking at rabbits and they came in because of the press. It’s really really good. Also they all still appear to be in good health. The ears club people brought in lots of toys (so did I) and they are being fed treats (lettuce and carrots) hay, hay cubes, good food and all cages have phone books and/or toilet paper rolls. I’m quite impressed. There was a large number that had to be PTS because of sickness or injury but the rest are doing well. Actually all but two of the bunnies who were there before have been adopted as well. It’s super hard to choose bunnies to cuddle when I’m there to volunteer. They are all beautiful. There are lops, harlequins, babies, even a californian rabbit. Very cute and I have to say being looked after really well.
Also the HS extended it’s ‘shadow’ program to bunnies as well; That is adopt one rabbit, get his bonded buddy for free! I’ve seen a number of people taking two rabbits!

Hey K&K are you doing cuddling this weekend (May 10/11)? Can you still bring someone along? I’d love to go if you are. Is Rodney still there at the shelter? I keep telling myself that we’ve got enough with 4 buns but….

LOL Yes that’d be great!! I’m still allowed to bring someone, just have to get a waiver signed I’m going to be there Saturday for cuddling from 3-5 (approximately, I usually get there a little early and stay a little late, but may not be early as we are putting up fences at the horse rescue Saturday morning).

Do you want to meet at 3pm in the ‘critter room’? I haven’t seen a Rodney at all during my volunteering, but is he one of the new 211? He very well could still be there, it’s hard to know all their names!! There are definitely lots to choose from if you have room for a 5th (or 6th … ) there are lots that have blue eyes too-very beautiful.

Sounds good to me! Rodney was one of the 211, he was a tan/white lionhead but he’s no longer on the site so I’m guessing he was adopted Oh well. I probably didn’t need a 5th bunny, right? lol
