        Hi,

I’ve had my rabbit for 2 months, and we’ve never seen cecatropes. Reading up on them, it seems like it’s possible that he drops them at certain point in the day and re-ingests them without us knowing (maybe the daytime when we’re likely at work), but I still find it strange that I’ve never seen him with them. I also haven’t seen the behavior that House Rabbit Society mentions. i.e. when the bunny appears to be bathing his belly and comes up chewing (which they say is when he re-ingests the cecal pellets).

Have others experienced the same, should I be worried? He seems healthy otherwise, eating, his fecal pellets look normal, etc.

        Thank you!

You’re not supposed to ever see the cecotropes =) The rabbit should eat them the moment they emerge. It’s often during the night. When you see cecotropes it’s often because the diet is too rich and the bunny produces excess cecotropes, can’t eat them all so some gets left lying around.

So this is the opposite of a cause for concern =)

I’ve never seen them myself but I know when she starts grooming between the hind legs and emerges chewing and making a squishy sound she is eating them

Cecals are sometimes called “Night Droppings” because they usually eat them at night.
