        Hello fellow bunny lovers,

I have a bunny called Buttons who is 1 year old. She is an adorable little grey otter lionlop. I’ve just had to send her to the vets which has given us a big scare as she had a ‘distended stomach’. For the first time ever she went off her food and decreased her pooing so we got her to the vets straight away and we pray she will be ok.

However I want to make sure I am giving her the best possible chance for great health and digestion. I’ve seen a few of these organic pellets advertised and so on but does anyone have any experience with which the best one to use is? Apart from pellets she has different types of hay and daily veg. Any help would be massively appreciated – I want to be the best bunny owner I can be.

Hi there, I use burgess excel nuggets. My vet recommended them to me, and I think they are recommended by most vets. You can buy them from pets at home or any other major pet shop .

I second Bella, my vet also recommended we change to excel nuggets after Bramble moved from junior bunny food. you can buy them at pets at home etc but you can get a 10kg bag from amazon for £15 that works out way cheaper. I just bought a dog food bin to keep it all in which is airtight so it keeps well. You can get excel hay and treats too.

I’ll definitely be picking some of this up soon to phase in – I’m not sure pets at home’s own brand of pellets is all that good for him.

                Ugh. Accidentally deleted my post.

After dropping Mr Roger off for neutering, I had a look at rabbit food. I found what appears to be burgess excel in a type suited for him in what appeared to be two packaging types. Both included mint.

However, after considerable dithering about the best type of hay on offer, I almost picked up a 4kg bag. I then noticed another brand, FibraFirst, which appears to be compressed hay-based and apparently is good for their teeth. As Mr Roger refuses to chew almost anything that isn’t hay, I was wondering whether anyone has any experience with this and whether it’s worth paying twice as much for?

                Here’s a picture of it:

Edit: not sure why the broken thumb nail is broken, I tried uploading to imgur in case the image was linked but here’s the link: http://imgur.com/vVk9HAxhttp://www.therabbithouse.com/blog/…-first.jpg

Mr Roger was done very late in the day. I called to ask if I could collect him, went to get him and then found out they’d changed their minds as he was too sleepy. Ended up buying two types of hay and smaller sizes of both foods to try out what he likes. Considered the science one but thought if others here are going with excel then that will do.

I couldn’t bare to come home with nothing. Not sure my wife will be pleased as money is tight at this time of year.

If he likes both, I think I’ll transition him onto excel with fibrafirst ratioed in as treats.

Its the excel with mint I have for Bramble, if Mr Roger likes it please check out amazon it honestly saved me a fortune. I got a 10kg bag for £15 and I think the postage was free, I bought a small bin for storing it for £6 but obviously you don’t need to do that I just thought it was better in something with a lid on it since according to my vet’s feeding recommendations for Bramble, this 15kg bag will last us the best part of a year!

Best pellet in UK is Science Selective (aniseed and fenugreek flavour). Rabbits go crazy for these, refusing to eat other pellets once they’ve tried SS. The pellets are longer than usual so it’s better for knawing down teeth, and it’s got a whooping 25% crude fibre.

Ah, I considered the ScienceSelective as I think my dog ate that brand before he was put on a special one for his health issues.

I’ll definitely consider getting a larger bag if he likes it, but we’re not really meant to have a rabbit* so it’s probably easier to smuggle smaller bags in. Unless I can get it delivered elsewhere and transport it in in a sturdy box.

I’ll have a look for larger portions of FibraFirst too, as that’s got 30% crude fibre and is about 10cm long – I could do with a discount on that!

                        Your advice is much appreciated.

*They saw us bring the cage and rabbit in, but appear to be operating the same ‘don’t flaunt it and we won’t search’ attitude as they do with our hamsters.
