I just got a 7 week old bunny. I know, she’s a bit young to leave the mother, I didn’t know this at the time. This bunny was a birthday surprise, and I thought I’d be getting an older one, and not a baby. So, she’s settling in quite well, very friendly, very confidant exploring her area. Seems to be doing really good, and already bonding with me well too. So far, my main concern is with spaying. She’s too young now, and I’d prefer to save up the money gradually, as opposed to taking a chunk of money from what we have now and putting it aside. I’d like to put it off for as long as possible without risking her health in any way. What is the recommended age for spaying a bunny?

DEFINITELY before 4 years old – BY 4 years old, there is an 80% chance they will have developed uterine cancer. Personally, I would never go past two years of age. However, 6-8 months is probably ideal and the best. I say this mainly because you will also most likely have a very hormonal and grouchy bunny on your hands. My girls were TERRIBLE once they hit about 5-6 months of age. They were like teenage daughters x 6.

CareCredit might be an option you could look into as well. That’s what I ended up doing when I got my girl spayed. I found a rabbit savvy vet that accepts carecredit (you can do a search for vets in your area on the site). Then I contacted the vet and asked them for a quote for a spay, and was able to get a line of credit that was just enough for the surgery. My vet wouldn’t do the spay before she was a year old, and she ended up having it at a year and a half. It worked out really well, because I was able to do the minimum payment for a few months when money was tight.

Oh yes, CareCredit is wonderful and a lot of vets take it! I use CareCredit for emergencies or when it’s a higher bill that I need to pay off over a time. If your bill is above $200, you have 6 months to pay it off and then it increases. I believe $1,000-2,000 bill you have 24 months w/ no interest. It’s a credit card so you can have to make sure you put the min. payment down each month (my min. is $25) and I got mine when I had HORRIBLE credit.

I applied for Care Credit, and they turned me down. I have no idea why, possibly because I owe money to quite a few places. But, the bf who got me the rabbit is eligible for it, so that works out well. I’m looking around for different places, there’s a place somewhere a few hours away that’s a low cost spay and neuter clinic that will do it for $65, as well as about 50 different vet clinics within 150 miles or so. Plenty of different options.

Just make sure to do your research and make sure your vet is rabbit savvy. A lot vets say they will see rabbits, but they really don’t know much about them. Read reviews and go to the House Rabbit Society website for a list of recommended vets in your area. Congrats and your Bday present!

I definitely will. I’m also wondering, since I dont want to make another new thread, I got a grow your own bunny kit, (not really, it’s the complete cage kit from Walmart) that came with a bottle, and I don’t think she likes it much. She drank a TON from the saucer I put down when I cleaned her cage, and after then she went crazy with the bottle, but I’m not sure she’s really getting much out of it. Until I can go get a crock for her water, do you think a 4 oz mason jar would be ok for her to drink out of? It’s only about two inches tall, so it’s a nearly perfect size for her. Are those safe?

That would be fine, Samara! Sorry to get back to you so late!

It’s ok I figured it would be alright, especially since she doesn’t weigh much more than the jar. I wedged it between her food bowl and her litterbox, and she hasn’t tipped it over yet. I’m not sure if she’s been drinking out of it or not, but I know that she’s been drinking out of her bottle since I fixed it. So either way it’s ok.
