I know that rabbits should have unlimited access to timothy hay, but how much hay should Pumpkin be eating in a 24 hour period? I’m just a little on edge, watching Pumpkin’s every bite and poop lately.

Uh oh. Relax LLH. I know she’s your baby, but you can’t force it down her throat. I’m sure if you’re seeing her eat it, and all seems well in the litter box, you’re fine. She’s so lucky to have you!

Ideally, bunnies should eat an amount of hay the size of their bodies each day (vol? not weight!). My lops eat at least that much; Kieko does not. With Kieko, just like Megabunny said, as long as she’s eating hay and pooping, we’re good. You can always try different hays to see if she prefers one over another, but all you can do is offer and encourage.

Powder mows down hay and inhales it like a bunny shaped vacuum cleaner. Stickers is less inclined to eat too much, but she’ll munch on it a bit throughout the day. It varies by bunnies. As long as they eat enough to keep their poops in shape and their gut moving, they are fine.

Personal experience, try different hays. My girls tolerate (at best) Timothy hays.

I’m so overly paranoid. Funny that I post this and then Pumpkin eats everything in sight yesterday! She ate twice as much as she usually does. She must know that mommy is worry-wart! I put some in a box in our living room. She loves to be in the living with us so I figured maybe I could get her to eat out here. She literally hopped into the box and mowed down! She really hasn’t been eating much hay lately and with the other stuff going on, I don’t want to worry about stasis too!

                  Thanks for the reassuring words!

Maybe she was just having a finicky hay “moment” (!) or a tiny bit of gas that passed. It sounds like she may prefer to eat with the family (she might miss something if she has to go back to her cage for a nibble). If you don’t mind having hay in the living room for her, that would be a good way to get her to eat more hay and give her something productive to do when she out with you.

I swear having hay in places other than their enclosure does make such a difference. Gus chows down when he encounters it anywhere else, so that’s a great idea! Another member told me her chin likes to come across a paper bag w/ hay, so she feeds hers a lot of hay in those.

Yep, I think the BBB box will be a permanent fixture in our living room…I like the paper bag idea too…she could climb right in!
