I noticed last week that my rabbit had urine stains on her behind and especially on her tail. I tried to clean it with a wipe, but that didn’t do much. In the last week she’s been urinating on the mat of x-pen and I noticed today again that her tail was wet with urine. I used animal shampoo to cleanse her tail and dried it, but I’m concerned about how the stains won’t come out. I’m also concerned because I noticed this blister on one her feet. Do you think the urine caused this injury?

What type of rabbit is she?

The “blister” is a callus on her foot that every rabbit has. Is it red, flaming up, cracking or bleeding? If it is,it’s sore hocks and you can cure it with some bag balm usually.

I hope someone else can help you with the urine, but have you been to the vet lately? I wouldn’t use animal shampoo (rabbit skin is very sensitive), just water.

I agree, probably a sore hock. Of course, the urine could be aggravating it too. I doubt it caused it though.

As for the urine soaked fur, there are several things that could be wrong. She could have a UTI, which is making her have to pee a lot and miss the box. So I would definitely have that checked out first to make sure. Another possibility is that she could be developing arthritis, which can start when they are as young as 5. If it’s painful for her to get into the litter box, she might be peeing on the mat and then sitting in it. There are some things that can been done to help with that. But you’re going to want to make sure that’s what it is and not something more serious. Do you have a good vet?

In the meantime, you could try using cornstarch to soak up some of the pee in her fur. A butt bath is okay, but you don’t want to do it a lot because it can cause the skin to become irritated. If you use shampoo at all, it needs to be something with no dyes or fragrances and is hypoallergenic.

            Here’s a nice article on it: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/buttbath.html

She is a Holland Lop. It isn’t bleeding, but it’s pinkish/white?

I have a vet in the area, but he’s not an exotic animal specialist. There is an exotic animal specialist about half an hour way. I used an oatmeal/aloe dog shampoo, as I read that’s acceptable for bunnies. It was just a butt/tail/back feet wash. I’ve noticed she’s a lot slower to move and sits in one place a lot. She’s eating okay, so that’s comforting.

Please take her to a vet. It’s not normal for a bunny to be soaked in urine like that.

I am. I am trying to get her into the exotic animal specialist tomorrow, because I’m already off. Hopefully they will be able to get her in.

Thanks for everyone’s help. She had elevated liver levels, but her kidney is fine. They put her on Critical Care feed, Milk Thistle, and an anti-biotic. Hopefully, she perks up.
