I thought I read somewhere that rabbits don’t like getting wet. But my bunny, Nimmy keeps sitting directly under his water bottle and will put his face up against it so the water will drip on him. Why?! He’s wasting so much water, and it’s getting all over his eye and making his fur wet (he looks like someone punched him in the eye). Is it possible to stop this or what?

Will he drink from a bowl?

I’ve tried that, he steps in the bowl. Any idea why he’s doing this?

I’ll rule out the obvious, is it hot where you live? My three girls HATE getting wet, I know because I often use a damp towel to get their loose fur. However, I’ve seen one lay in a leaking water bottle before on an extremely hot day (they’re not the brightest and they avoid frozen water bottles).

Another possible issue is that he doesn’t have enough space (or he feels that way). If he lives in a cage most of the day, try giving him an ex pen area if you can and no one can supervise him.

Hot? No not really. For the most part I control the temperature in my room, it’s never above 75 degrees (the temp only goes that high when it’s REALLY cold out). If his new behavior is because of temperatures, would it be because the temp is changing frequently? I have a space heater in my room because my mom doesn’t turn on the heat. So it could go from 40-50 degrees to about 70 within an hour.

And I don’t think its because of space, I just recently moved him into a larger cage and he seems to really love it. He’s never chewing on the bars to get out which he used to do with his previous cage constantly.

Bunnies generally don’t do well with extreme changes in temperature, but I don’t think the space heater would be an issue unless it’s blowing right on her..

Now this is just an idea and I have no background information regarding this, but could he have mites? If he’s itchy then maybe the water helps to relieve some of that. I seriously have no idea though.

Sorry for the late reply, I’m swamped with homework and work (that’s the retail life for you). But in the days I haven’t replied I’ve been keeping an eye on Nimmy and his ‘sitting under the water bottle’ habits. And I can confirm it’s not because of temperature change. On multiple occasions he’s still getting all wet without me changing the temperature in any way. I’m just dying to know why he does it

And I highly doubt he has mites, I check his ears on a regular basis, and the way he sits under the nozzle of the bottle the water gets on the base of his ear (just behind his eye).
