My bunny just got neutered today. He’s now cold when I touch him and isn’t moving much. Every so often he’ll run to the other side of the cage and will then sit with his head pointed up and his teeth showing slightly. This seems weird but is it normal right after the surgery? I put a heating pad in his cage but he hasn’t gone over to it at all even though he’s run over it. He also hasn’t eaten or drank water from what I have seen. Should I just leave him alone or is this really concerning?

It’s good that he has a heating pad, he may choose to seek it out later. Keeping him warm is very important. If he is markedly cold you may need to warm him against your body (wrapped in a fleece blanket etc).

He’s probably groggy after having been under and then pain-meds with that – that’s normal. But you want him to eat as soon as possible. Entice him with his favourite foods. It doesn’t really matter what he eats as long as he eats, so you can offer him banana or some other treat. Fresh greens and/or herbs may be appreciated, Serve water in a bowl, a bottle may be too much trouble. Check for poop and pee.

If he’s not eaten anything in 12 hours or by tomorrow morning, whichever comes first, it’s time to syringe-feed. You can grind up pellets and mix with water or you can get Critical Care which is a powder that mixes with water.

Bramble was the same after his, he barely moved, ate or drank for the first 24 hours. I had stuff from the vet like a food supplement for him for a few days and the vet told me to feed him whatever he would eat, even if it was a load of treats, better to have more sugar than he should than to not eat anything. Bramble took banana and apple mostly with the occasional bit of leafy veg.

My vet said as long as he was eating something, peeing and pooping along with taking the supplement and his other meds he would be fine. We did have a bit of a scare with him though so I would second what bam said: take him to the vet if he doesn’t eat anything in 12 hours. Bramble ended up on antibiotics for a while but that was more because he wasn’t peeing rather than anything else.
