This morning I went through my usual routine of taking care of the Flopster.  I approached her xpen and placed a bowl of pellets in the middle.  It was odd because she usually goes crazy and immediately devours them.  This time, she just ignored it.  I had breakfast and cut a little piece of apple to see how she would respond and again she ignored it.

She just sat there a bit and then I watched her groom herself a little, lie on her tummy, and also rip up some cardboard.

This has happened only once where she refused food but when I got back later that afternoon from work she was fine.  However, what was different this time is that the first time she was completely listless and motionless. This time, I have seen her do the other activities so i’m a bit confused.  Is she just refusing the food and not in the mood or is there more of a concern.

FYI, she didn’t eat much hay last night, only about 10 to 12 poops and drank a little bit of water.  Usually there is a pile of poop.

        Thoughts?

You need to get Flopsie to the vet asap. It sounds like Floppy Bunny Syndrome. Don’t wait, go to an emergency vet if necessary.

Floppy Bunny Syndrome? Why would you say that Roberta?

Flopsie – How is she doing now? Did you try treating it as if it were gas?

Ah, The first time she was listless… Sorry, I am having major computer problems at home and work… Gas does sound more likely

I think she is okay now. It was a weird episode. I left her pellets in her area before work and when I came back she had not touched them. I made her a salad and she nibbled that a bit.

Since she ate a little, I was okay but still anxious. This morning, she seemed to be okay. There was some poop and she ate some pellets that I fed her. So I guess things are looking better but i’ll continue to monitor at the moment.

I guess my question is if its gas, how do I tummy rub her? I can slip one hand under between her front and back paws. But I can’t really stroke it. I can however, knead or squeeze it a bit, does that help? or is there a video online I can watch for reference?

I have also read that there are the baby gas stuff that can be helpful. Is this in pill form? How do you guys suggest administering it to her if she is already refusing food, even treats such as apple?

                  Thanks for all your responses!

The baby gas stuff you are referring to is Simethicone. It’s a liquid and can be very helpful for a bunny dealing with gas.

If I can, I try putting one hand on each side and making a circular motion when rubbing.

I don’t have the link but there is a video online, just google bunny tummy massage. The lady that does the video that makes trimming bunny nails look so easy has a video out there. She does it by gently massaging low on the bunny’s sides and kinda rolling the bunny back and forth a little. She also shows lifting the bunny’s back end gently with her hand underneath.

Mine also seem to like a little rub from underneath — only allowed sometimes though!
