        Hiya.

At what age is a bun too old for alfalfa hay? I went to the pet store today and without realizing bought alfalfa hay instead of the usual meadow hay. Merlin is 6-7 months old so not quite a baby anymore. I still have a little bit of meadow hay left that I can mix in with the alfalfa, would this be okay for him? I don’t want to upset his little tum!

        Thanks!

The alfalfa should be fine for Merlin, at his age. He apparently likes the meadow hay, so it’s good that he’s already started on some grass hay. Mixing the meadow and alfalfa is a good idea.  You can try other grass hay for him too, such as timothy or orchard grass, and slowly phase out the alfalfa.  Although, alfalfa can be given in small amounts as an occasional treat to adult rabbits, sprinkled on top of their other hay.

I would probably pick up another bag of grass hay and reserve the alfalfa and mix in little bits of that as a “treat hay” like toby said. I wouldn’t give the alfalfa all by itself…
