I’m worried, Mosley has been losing toenails..(3 total) over the past week. They just fall out and she doesn’t seem to be in pain, limping, she’s still eating and drinking and pooping fine, there isn’t any blood from the nail falling out it’s just the base white part that holds the nail is empty. Why is this happening? I haven’t clipped her toenails in a couple of months, so I clipped them hoping that would help.

Is it diet related? How can I help this stop?

        Thanks

You need to clip them more then “a couple months” My house rabbit society reccomend you trim them down at least every two-three weeks. If you don’t trim them this often, your rabbit will stand in an uncomftertable position, get painful sore hocks, and they could even get infected and harm your rabbit.

If the toenails are actually falling out, I would go to the vet. I’ve never heard of this before.

          What are you feeding her?

Okay, thank you for the information. I will be sure to clip them every 2 weeks now.

I am feeding her organic greens every morning, she has hay throughout the rest of the day, and at night a tablespoon of pellets. Some treats here and there consist of a slice of apple, a Oxbow Barley treat, carrot, or dried banana.

I was thinkign I should take her to the vet too because I’m worried but at the same time, she is acting completely normal and hopping around just fine. So, I don’t really know what the vet would be able to do?

Her diet seems perfect. If she’s her totally normal self, I wouldn’t go to the vet then.

Is the base where the nail fell out bleeding, sore, or inflamed? Make sure it doesn’t get infected, or that will be a diasaster.

Is her nail getting caught on something, perhaps? Once they are long, they will snag on anything (even the floor) and can be ripped out.

They don’t look sore, red, or inflamed and there was no blood. I have been checking on them and they look normal and don’t seem to bother her. She’s eating fine still, and I have been watching her nails closely. The only thing I can think of is that her nails are getting caught when she is running on the carpet and doing binkies. Or in her cage in the parts that she doesn’t have a blanket to walk on. So, maybe I should add more blankets to the cage. Let me paint a picture of it: It has a bottom and top level with a ladder going up, and its pretty large. It was given to me from a friend who used it for a ferret, and it is a wired cage. Mosley has a bed on the bottom and her litter box/hay/water. A wire ramp going between levels. The top is used for play time with lots of toys to choose from and a willow tunnel. She doesn’t have a blanket up there, so I’m wondering if that’s where she is getting hurt. She spends hours out of her cage each day on the couch with me. She likes to sit with me and get her head scratched and give me kisses. Usually has time to flop and take a nap on the top of the couch by my head. Then gets down on the carpet to do darts and binkies around the living room. (Another possibility of snags).

I have been holding her nails near good lighting trying to see where the blood inside the nail ends so I know how short to cut it. It’s hard because she squirms so much. I’ve tried making a bunny burrito and wrapping her in a towel. She’s still not a fan. Any other suggestions on how to know how short to cut them?

I’m trying to do everything right here!
