Hi all, somewhat new bunny owner here. My girlfriend and I have two girls that we keep at her home. We are both in college, I’ll be graduating in May 2015 with a full-time job lined up. Our girls are both mini lops, a black glossy one of about 5.5 months, and a white/brown around 7-8. To give you a summary, we love them very dearly. We’ve learned a lot from them, and we’re committed to giving them a great life. They have their own room, large enough, renovated, and decked out with long runs. They love it. They are unbonded and haven’t been spayed yet, but that’ll be coming very soon. (Sort of working out the basics before we bond them). To cut to the chase now, we heard of a rabbit living in not so good conditions (we were shown a video of her being chased by someone trying to throw an alcoholic drink on her. She got away.) But we decided to rescue her less than 24 hours later. We’ll have her before this time tomorrow and we have a full setup for her already. I’m just wondering what to expect. I’m prepared for behavioral issues, we just want to know that we’ve done the right thing. Alternatively, we’re trying to get her a good home. But, we trust our own experience more than others and would only be willing to pass her along to someone we both know very well and could work with to teach them what we know. She’s a beautiful black and white girl, age looks less than a year. Please give us tips!!

            Hi Tophdade,
No two rescues are ever quite the same…. Chances are she will be extremely shy at first and looking for a secure place to hide so make sure she has a nice box or tunnel she can sit in till she feels confident in roaming further or sitting openly in her cage. Monitor her poops and pees closely, I know you will be feeding her the right things but she will probably be transitioning from a very poor diet. A vet check would be the first thing to do too to get an idea of her over all condition and have a baseline to work from. Avoid interaction with your own bubs for a few weeks until you are sure you have dealt with any issues such as mites or other conditions that can be transmitted, this is easy, just remember to wash your hands between handling buns and wear an apron or over shirt that can be removed before picking up your own bunnies.

              Roberta,

Thanks very much! We drove 5 hours total and got her home earlier today. She’s the sweetest thing. We renamed her Clarice in honor of the 50th anniversary of Rudolph this year. She’s a white/black mini rex I think, but perhaps pictures will come later. She’s all set up in a large cage on the opposite side of our two girls. We’re going to get her to the vet and keep her penned-off until then. To our relief, she was actually rather well taken care of. She never had a hidey-hole or anything, but she was very good about litter and was allowed much of the day to roam free. Thankfully, she was never hurt with her free-roam environment as a baby. Also, she appears to be about 2.5 months old. Very sweet bunny, nails/ears/teeth look fine; eating, pooping, peeing just fine and very personable (kisses already!) Looks like we got there just in time..
