        Hi all,

Got our first bunny a couple of months ago, and as I raise alfalfa and orchard grass hay for my other critters, am wondering if I have to purchase timothy hay also, which is not very common here.  He’s getting too old to be eating alfalfa, and seems to like the orchard grass hay fine.  If someone had told me last year when I had the field replanted that I was going to loose my mind and add rabbits to the menagerie, I’d’ve planted timothy.

He also eats paper.  I thought he was just chewing it, but can’t find the scraps.  Doesn’t seem to be coming to any harm, yet, but can this cause problems?  His cage is so much easier to clean with a layer of newspaper on the bottom.

        Thanks for any answers!

You could plant some timothy next year for variety, but, as I’ve found this year (since I apparently haven’t yet found acceptable timothy hay!), orchard grass alone is fine and the important thing is that the bunny eat enough grass hay period. You’re good to go with the orchard hay.

Oh good, I’ll stick with the orchard grass then.  Replanting the field is a major investment, involves hiring the neighbor to plow, disc, level and plant the field, as well as buying a couple hundred pounds of seed, and then it takes a couple of years to get up to full production.  Whew!
