4 months ago I got two bunnies Josie and another Bunnie.  I had to give one away because I found out they were male and female. A few days later I got a new bunny lucy. Lucy and Josie had a few problems (Josie kept trying to bite Lucy’s privates) but after a week they settled down. They have been living together for quite a while with no problems. Today I can home to find quite a bit of fur in and around the cage and Lucy had three distinctive marks on her. One above her eye, one on her ear, and one on the back of her neck. They were acting normal when I got home. Did Josie attack lucy? Should I separate them? What are the chances of this happeneing again? I have them separated right now and I’ve cleaned the cuts. Please help!!!

People in the know have said both rabbits should bed spayed and the females fight more than males do…they are very territorial.
Best bond usually forms with spayed neutered female male couple. Same sex can work too but not when they are intact.

Hi there! Yes, the bad news is you will definitely have to have both girls spayed by a bunny savvy vet. The good news is, two months after their spay you can start rebonding them again. Bonding can take a while and it’s important to be patient with them. Your bunnies definitely did attack each other and absolutely will again, so it’s important to keep them seperate until they’ve been spayed and for two months after to give the hormones time to leave their systems.

Even if you do decide not to rebond them, it’s still important to have them spayed as female bunnies especially have high risk of uterine cancer from 2 years of age, like 80% chance. When that’s done, I see no reason to not rebond them. In the meantime it may make rebonding easier if you keep them in adjoining enclosures (so they can still see and smell each other), just make sure there’s enough space between the bars of the cages/xpens so that they can’t hurt each other even while seperated.
