so things are bad with our coco. female 2 yrs healthy came from neglected home.  so everything was great for a week or two then have went so very wrong. she will come out of her cage right over to me and pee. I don’t know what to do. things have been so black with her for over a month. she is healthy no UTI. not sprayed – guess some vets wont.

so I got to thinking – not going to do anything till I get other options. but what would happen if I just let her be. we have her running around a small part of our living room (3 by 4 feet). what would happen if I put down a rug and just let her pee or poop on it to her hearts content for a few days? would it get her dominance \ territory stuff out of the way- and get her settled down?

is there any way to start over with a bunny – from scratch. she was in the basement being neglected before she came to us. what if we did something like cover her cage for a few days and just leave her alone- would this return her back to square one as when she first came to us? so that way we could start more slowly.

any chance of getting her spaying, this seems like the first step to do before considering anything else

Bunnies do not have reset buttons. You can try wiping up the pee with a paper towels and putting the paper towel in the litterbox to show her where you’d like the pee to go, and clean the spot where she peed with 50/50 vinegar/water to remove the pee scent so she won’t be drawn to pee in the same spot. Intact bunnies can be difficult to litter train so I don’t know how much luck you’ll have. You should really look into low-cost spay options through rescues, shelters, SPCA, etc., especially for a female bunny. The risk of uterine cancer is so high (80%), and treatment (which includes an emergency spay) will cost more than going ahead with a spay now. Aside from the cost of a spay, as a bunny owner, it is your responsibility to provide for medical care that your bunny may need so you should immediately start saving for such emergencies.

the lowest for spaying would be 150 at least

                  That isn’t bad at all.

I have to pay 135 for each boy I have, Queen will be much more.

try the low cost places in your area. I just got mine done for around 100 for my girl and 95 for boy, somewhere in there, the total was 195. This place does do bunnies on a regular basis.

You can always ask if they will take a payment plan at the vet. It’s worth a shot and will really help the peeing/pooping issues.

I agree, there is no reset button. If the peeing is hormonal (likely), then it will probably continue because bunnies need to “maintain” their territory. So marking will be an ongoing thing, not just one time.

You can try to see if there are rescue or adoption places near where to live because they usually do it cheaper or based on family issue or income. I live in VA and I’m getting my male bunny neutered soon and they are willing to do it for 45$. Which is a blessing. So keep looking for a place, I’m sure you’ll find one. $150 may seem expensive, but if that’s really the last option, I would still go for it because you’ll have a healthier bunny. Anyways good luck!

spays will cost more than neuters and i’ve seen prices up towards the $400 dollar range. To be honest, 100 to 200 dollars isn’t considered to be a good price. Granted, I know that for most people 200 bucks is nothing to scoff at. But if you consider the behaviors as well as the health issues that you have to deal with, it might cost less to get them spayed.

That being said, I would say that for behaviors, there is no such thing as a reset button. However, learning is ongoing, and therefore can change behavior. Behaviors that have a long history of reinforcement or punishment are more difficult to change as opposed to new or novel behaviors. However, they still can be changed. You just have to be consistent and follow through

just did a calling session to more than 88 vets. highest was in the 500 range, one vet doesn’t do rabbits because he is allergic. what do you think of a vet that doesn’t give pain meds to you to give at home? how about a vet that sees rabbits just for neuter purposes- no routine care? also if we just had a physical for her is it really that important to have a 1st visit with another DR if that person is just going to spay?
