Hiya all.. I was just wondering how necessary the 2in1 Myxamatosis+VHD jab was for house bunnies. Bonnie’s yearly vaccine is due but her and Bilbo both don’t go outside as we live in an upstairs maisonette so I wondered if she still needs to have it? Obviously, when we get round to somewhere with a garden, I’d vaccinate both bunnies but Bonnie has never been outside in her life (except when taking her to the vets) and Bilbo hasn’t in over a year. Thanks.

I live in the UK (england) & it’s turning really cold. We don’t really get mosquitos here.

In the south of Sweden where we have outbreaks of myxi every year, the myxi shot is strongly recommended. Myxi can be transferred by mosquitoes and ticks. You can also bring the virus in on your shoes or your other pets (dog, cat) can bring it inside. If you pick stuff outside for your bunnies like dandelion greens or fresh grass, there may be virus on it in case there are wild rabbits with myxi in your area.

The RHD is not as common as myxi here, but since the new vaccine is a combo vaccine and because RHD is extremely deadly and the rabbit that catches it dies in a lot of pain, I vaccinate for both diseases yearly. The single vaccine for just myxi has to be given twice a year so the double vaccine is simpler and the cost amounts to the same.

I have seen two different vets in the same practice with differing opinions on this, I am in Scotland by the way. The first vet we seen said Bramble didn’t need the vaccine since he is a house bunny and we don’t live near a park or any green space really where its likely that insects would get in and carry the virus, we also live in a third floor flat. The vet that did his neuter said he should have it because flies can carry myxo and obviously it doesn’t matter where you live, flies will get in from time to time. I opted to not have it for Bramble to be honest, none of my house bunnies have ever had it even though I lived in the countryside for 20 something years.
