Hi, I have a 3 month old netherland dwarf. I’m a little confused about what to feed her. I’m following the Diet House Rabbit Society faq here: http://rabbit.org/faq-diet/

And it’s saying to give unlimited pellet and alfalfa hay until 7 months and then after 7 months, switch to timothy? Just want to confirm if this is right or did I read it wrong?

Currently feeding a mix of alfalfa and timothy (mostly alfalfa). She doesn’t seem to like the pellets and hasn’t eaten much of them. Any idea how to teach her to eat the pellets?

        thanks!

          Hi there!
The house rabbit society does have good guidelines to follow as far as feeding goes. It’s generally reccomended to feed young buns alfalfa hay and then switch to Timothy. But, my buns been fed grass hay his whole life (he’s about 7 months now) and hasn’t seemed to miss alfalfa hay. A mix of alfalfa and Timothy should be fine! Alfalfa is rich and gives young buns more energy that they need for growing, but a mix should be fine!
I would try (gradually) switching to another brand of pellets if your bun is not interested. Mine loves oxbow bunny basics young rabbit, and had been on science select junior pellets, which he also devoured (the latter brand I could find at petco).
          Hope this helps!

I’m feeding the oxbow organic pellets, can’t remember the exact name right now. Should I try a pellet with more alfalfa in it than grass hay?

I’ll look into those two brands.

They alfalfa to Timothy hay transition is correct. Probably you want a gradual transition since bunnies like most other animals do not like sudden changes.

Oxbow Organic Pellets should be fine–as long as they’re intended for “young” or “junior” rabbits (those under 6 months, I think Oxbow says something like under 1 year old). As long as it’s got lots of fiber in it ( I think a good minimum amount is something like 15%) and plenty of protein, you should be alright. Oxbow is a good brand for bunny’s needs, as most of their pellets are well balanced.
