I have three bunnies that currently live outside in hutches. I want to build a big cage for them and have them in my room. When I approach my dad about it he won’t even talk about it. He says that they stink, and when I try to say something about that he won’t let me. This is really starting to upset me because I want my bunnies to live a long and happy life.

My dad was like that once. “That ***** rabbit isn’t coming in my ***** house” he’d say but now they sit on the couch together watching tv

Smellwise they smell less than cats imo, but the smell is much worse on hot days but as long as you keep the tray clean it should be alright.
Try to sit down with your dad, explain that they don’t smell and that you’ll keep the trays clean so there won’t be any smell. If you can come to some sort of agreement, like they only come in at night/when the weather’s bad or that the trays have to be cleaned everynight, etc. So he might relax and let you keep them in more if things go well. Just be mature and come to an agreement, even if you have to wash all the dishes or do the laundry.

Are your bunnies spayed and/or neutered and are they litter trained in their hutch?

Is the smell the only factor? Is he referring to the bunnys smell itself or the urine?

Bunnies are very clean and if you clean their litter box they don’t usually smell. I literally bury my nose in my bunny daily to get a dose of her smell. She smells like nothing. Just neutral.

The bunny poops may have a mild pungent odor. It’s not strong at all. However urine can be rough. Urine smell can be rancid but if you clean and take out trash it will prevent it from lingering. Spaying or neutering is said to decrease the intensity of urine odor but I can’t confirm this as it smells the same to me

Our landlord doesn’t want three bunnies in the house either. We keep our buns in the garage in the winter but we let them run around out of their hutches in the house too. In the summer we keep them outside in their hutches but let them in the playpen on the grass for a couple hours (almost) every day. My bunnies have lived just as long when I keep them outside or in. Hope you figure out your problem! Good Luck!

I am planning on getting them spayed/neutered before they come inside and they are litter box trained

My parents used to do this as well. Do your bunnies live together? If so, it may be easier to convince because they’d all live in one pen. I would definitely make sure your dad is on board with keeping them in the house BEFORE you spay/neuter them, as they really should be inside as they heal.

So the smell is the only issue? Spaying and neutering will help with the smell (if they even smell at all, non-bunny people just assume they do). Fixed bunnies are much less likely to spray urine.

I use Yesterday’s News litter and I change their potties every 2 days and people are always really surprised that I have a rabbit room and my house does not smell like animals at all. You have to be very diligent with changing the litter because I find if I let them go for 3 days or more, I can start to smell the pee.

Maybe your Dad would be willing to let them inside for a trial period?

Oh your dad sounds like a tough one to get through to if he shuts down that fast. I so hope he will come around. Are all your bunnies together right now? Could you start with just one if they are all separate anyway?

My dad was the exact same way, but I just bought everything & set it up & brought home my bunny anyway. I don’t know how old you are so if that will get you in trouble don’t do that lol. But the litter box I have for her is separate from her cage, it’s basically like a big pink tubberware with a hole in the side that she can hop in and out of. I also put a curtain over the door. So anyway I put the open part of the the tubberware against her open cage door when i’m not watching her so she can’t get out & destroy things when I’m at work. I clean that litterbox about twice a week, the first time I just through everything out & put new newspaper & hay & the second time I wash the whole thing with vinegar and soap. You absolutely cannot smell anything in my room & the vinegar gets the smell out of the litterbox so there not build up or anything.

I know it was kind’a a lot of info but I hope that helps

Also here’s a picture of her napping in her litterbox before I put the curtain on it
