So my 6.5 year old Mini Rex, Benny, had to have surgery to remove bladder sludge on Wednesday. He seems to be recovering well, but his poops have been on the soft side and their getting stuck to his feet. He still seems tender, so I don’t want to be too firm or pick him up in case I rip his stitches. Does anyone have any tips on what I should do?

It’s common for their stomachs to get a bit upset after surgery. Hay is usually the remedy for poopy butt. You can give a probiotic for bunnies (f ex Benebac) to help restore his intestinal microbial flora. Is he eating like he should? Poop on his feet is of course not nice but if it’s not a lot, I’d leave it until he’s healed a bit more.

I was about to order some Benebac, but I have a brand new bottle of probiotics in my fridge and was wondering if it might be okay to just give him those? These are the ones I have: http://www.vitacost.com/davinci-laboratories-mega-probiotics-non-dairy-120-vegetarian-capsules-1 they don’t contain dairy, but I’m still not sure if it’s okay for him to have them. I’ll buy they Benebac if necessary, but after $500+ in vet bills it would be nice to save a little money if possible. He’s eating well, just seems pretty hungry after taking him off pellets. Thanks so much for your help!

I had my dad pick up some American Health Chewable Acidophilus tablets which are supposed to be milk free, but then it says “Contains milk ingredients – probiotic cultures are grown in a milk based medium. Milk proteins are later removed and are undetectable in the on-shelf product at 2.5 parts per million.” Should they be fine, or should I not give them to him?

They are probably fine since the milk content is so very very low. The info is intented for milk-allergics and rabbits are not super-sensitive like allergics are to milk, it’s mostly the lactose they can’t digest as adults. There are people who give their bunnies yoghurt as a probiotic and that’s not ideal, but the tablets you have should be fine.
