The only way to know if she has ear mites or if it could be an ear infection, is to take her to the vet. They can check deep down and even look inside the ear with a camera. If it is mites or an infection, you want to get that cleared up ASAP.

Ok thanks. And she hasn’t done it any more so it may have just been a itch

It could have just been a loose piece of ear wax that she was trying to shake out. Repeated ear scratching is a sign of mites or an infection so it would need to be checked out if it keeps happening.

Hopefully it was just a one time case of “itchy ear”! 🙂

If it continues, the vet will check her ears and prescribe meds as needed. You can’t always tell with the naked eye if mites are present.

Ooo, I didn’t know I wouldn’t be able to see myself if she had ear mites

A really bad case of mites is visible because there will be a lot of nasty debris in the ear. But a new occurrence may not be visible. They are really tiny.

You’d be able to see them only if they have multiplied to a massive extent, but it isnt something you would like to see. The pictures they show on Google Images are usually of very critical stages. In the early stages, you can see brownish crusts (it will look like hardened, brown wax) in the outer ear. Its not easily visible, you will have to hold your bunny still and look in with a torch on. If your bunny is continuing to scratch ears an jerk head often, dont wait till you see the crusts.

A shot of Ivermectin will do the job, I guess. Or Selamectin, if its available where you live.

I’ll try to look it up on Google. Thanks

If cost is major concern, you could get some Revolution and see if it helps. If it does, then you know it was likely ear mites. If it doesn’t, then no harm done.

Of course, the best advice is always to have the vet check it out to get a proper diagnosis.

Ok thanks. What does the Revolution do and where can I get it?

Revolution is a flea medication that you apply to the neck/shoulder area. You can purchase it at a vet’s office. You want to get the kind meant for kittens.

Whatever you do, do not get Frontline. It is toxic to rabbits.

Ok. Would I be able to get it at a pet store or Walmart, ect? There is no exotic vet around here. Only horse, dog, and cat vets.

It’s only sold at vet offices. You can get it from a dog/cat vet though.

I wouldn’t purchase anything from the store if you don’t know what it is. There are products out there that are perfectly safe for dogs and cats, but harmful to bunnies. It’s best to get advice from a vet if you don’t know.

Ok. How much does it usually cost do you know?

I just looked it up, and it came up on the walmart website. It says revolution for cats and it treats ear mites.

That’s the correct brand, but the wrong dosage. You need the cat/kitten formula for 0-5 lbs.
