I set up those Ikea bag holders that people recommended as good hay racks over my bunny’s litter box so he doesn’t have to sit in his hay all the time.

My bunny tends to tear out long strands of hay and somehow a lot of the hay seems to end up in his litter box. Is this normal, is there anything about the setup I can improve? He seems less interested in the hay as soon as it ends up in his litterbox. Photo attached.

        Thanks!

        Hi,

Most rabbits will not eat soiled hay. However, I wouldn’t worry! The hay will likely end up everywhere at some point. At long as he’s eating some of it, then that is fine. If you are on a budget and can’t afford to let him “waste” hay, then you could try putting smaller amounts in the hay holder. Or you could also move it. Oh, you could also put some cardboard or paper or something under where the hay falls so it doesn’t get spoiled. But I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you. Rabbits are naturally a bit messy with their hay, so it’s kind of guaranteed to happen!

If the hay pieces are super long, its likely that pulling out long pieces is bringing other pieces of hay with it. Maybe cut the pieces of hay shorter (6 to 8 inches).

Thank you, good to know that it’s not too out of the ordinary. I agree that he definitely eats 80% of it, just feel bad letting that 20% go to waste! I bought hay from Sierra Valley and they come in pretty long strands, so I may try break them up some.

Oh, trust me, you are NOT alone! I don’t think there’s a single rabbit in the world who eats every single piece of hay in a batch! On the bright side: You know he’s getting enough of it. If he was eating every single strand, then that would probably be a sign that he needed more!
