I am new to this forum, but not to keeping bunnies, so this is just a refresher. I currently feed my 2 year old 4 lb Lionhead girl 1 1/3 cups veggies and 1/4 cup pellets daily, which seems about right. She often times doesn’t finish her pellets, and will usually take almost a whole day to finish her veggies. Is this still a suitable amount? She’s not the best hay eater either.

I recently took my bunny to the vet, he’s 4.28 lbs. I asked her whether my diet regimen worked (2.5 cups of greens, 1/4 of pellets, unlimited hay). Since my bunny was lighter than we thought he was when we adopted him, she suggested that the greens was plenty but I should go only 1/8-1/4 pellets at most or risk him getting overweight.

So we’ve tried to reduce our pellets quantity to 1/8-1/4.

So should I increase the amount of greens? She barely finishes hers as is, so I’m a bit concerned that she won’t eat any of her hay if I increase.

I would suggest reducing the pellets by half (down to 1/8th cup), over the next few weeks or so. Give slightly less each week until she’s at the desired amount. From there you can judge if you think she needs more veggies or if this increases her hay consumption.

Are you feeding veggies and pellets separately? I feed veggies for breakfast and pellets for dinner. All veggies are gone by the evening and all pellets are gone by the next morning.

What kind of greens are you feeding? Is it possible she just isn’t overly enthusiastic about the ones you are feeding?

I usually give her pellets in the morning and greens in the evening, but there are usually pellets left when I give her greens. I will reduce the amount. As far as greens go, I have tried nearly everything. Today, she got green leaf lettuce, bok choy, and cilantro, the latter being the only veggie she will eat enthusiastically.

Try different greens to see bunny likes. Bunnies have different preferences just like peopgas.Ours like lettuce but will not touch collards or spinach.
Be careful with plants of the cabbage family as they can cause gas. Also if bunny gets diarrhea it can be from too much veggies…this is per a local 4H member who knows a lot about animals.
