I am looking for a way to be able to flush my rabbit’s urine, and possibly feces, down the toilet. We use a lot of plastic bags to dispose of his waste and I’d like to try something more sustainable. He is litterbox trained with aspen shavings.

Are there options for a slotted floor or screen that my rabbit can stand on, so that urine will pass to the bottom (and he won’t be stepping in it) and feces will stay on top, without having to use litter material that can’t be flushed? I am picturing a regular-type litterbox with a perforated slide out tray or something, but I’m not sure if that exists.

Please let me know if you have any ideas or have tried something similar.

You can buy a littler screen. The poos will sit on top and the pee will go through.

As for “flushable” litter, there are a few options. Feline Pine and the fine texture Yesterday’s News are rumored to be flushable. You obviously couldn’t put a lot of it down the toilet at once though. I imagine you would have a problems if you did.

If you have a house with a yard, you could always compost the contents of his litter box. You can buy ready made composters or buy a large cheap plastic trash can with a lid, punching a few holes in the bottom of the can for drainage. Mix the litter with veggie scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc. and in a few months you will have nice compost for your garden.

Thanks everyone! We were able to find a litter box with a screen and haven’t had to use any litter, his feet don’t get wet and we can just dump right into the toilet. One day when we have a yard we will definitely consider the compost option. Thanks!
