        Hi guys

I have a six month old male New Zealand White. I adopted him a couple of weeks ago and am finally going to be able to buy appropriate pellets this Friday. I’ve been feeding him All Living Things: Daily Rabbit Diet pellets, which is what I also feed my seven year old Dutch rabbit. I know younger rabbits need a different kind of pellet though, so could anyone please give me recommendations? Preferably a link, as my local pet stores don’t have a lot of healthy variety :/

Also, how long should I be feeding him specialized pellets? If I understand correctly, there is a difference between adult rabbit food and young rabbit food. I know that once he hits seven months, he should no longer be getting unlimited pellets, but when should I switch him to “Adult” rabbit food?

From what I can remember 6 months is the time to switch over to adult rabbit pellets. I think rabbits are considered adult at that age. I know that young rabbit pellets are usually alfalfa based which you don’t want in your adult pellet food formula. I guess you could just go ahead and give him what your other rabbit is eating.

Sindriona is right, at 6 months he is old enough to eat adult food. However, the food you’re feeding you other rabbit has Alfalfa in it, which isn’t good for adults, as well as other stuff like seeds, grains, lots of dehydrated fruit and so on, which is all considered “junk food” for rabbits. It’s kind of like feeding your kid candy bars all day. They should be eating a Timothy based, plain pellet, with no other stuff in it. Oxbow Essentials is a popular brand.

Hazel is right also. I didn’t look up what food you were using. You definitely want a plain pellet not ones with seeds and stuff in them. Oxbow is a good brand. I am currently using Kaytee Timothy pellets because my girl rabbit refuses to eat any oxbow. Definitely try Oxbow if you can. best of luck!

I feed mine Dumor and she’s really likes it. She’s a New Zealand also. Ive used Dumor feed for ducks, chickens, rabbits, everything really lol. I think it’s a great brand (my rabbit is about 4 months old)

It’s totally normal for your Dutch to hate it at first. Like I said, those types of food are like candy for them, so now being presented with healthy pellets instead is understandably upsetting for the poor guy. He’ll get used to it, don’t worry. As soon as he understands that that’s all he’s getting, he’ll take to them quickly enough. So glad you were able to get your hands on Oxbow pellets, they are great!
