I just decided I’m gonna give away rabbit to someone else and I’m gonna get 2 male Dutch rabbits. They are brothers. So, they are 8 weeks old and have been together ever since birth. People told me since they were brothers and have been together their whole life they will get along fine as long as no female is present. But I’m gonna keep them in the hutch that I had my *female* rabbit in. So what can I use to get the scent of her out of there that way the males won’t smell a female rabbit and start fighting over one that isn’t even there. And so, is that true that they won’t fight as long as there is no female or female scent. (They are BROTHERS remember and they are NOT neutered. Thanks.

They will most likely still fight once puberty sets in and hormones are raging. Neutering is the only surefire way to prevent this
Also I find a 1:3 white vinegar/water solution to be pretty effective at cleaning and removing odors (just be sure to rinse thoroughly as vinegar smells very strong)

After reading your previous post about your rabbit I have got to say that I don’t think two rabbits is ideal for you if you can’t even afford vet care for the one you have. I don’t mean this rudely, I just mean that double the rabbits means double the supplies and if one gets ill and transmits it to the other then vet care will also be double.
Personally, I think your best course of action would be to spay your current bunny and try to rebuild trust between you two. You can find lots of articles on bonding with your bun on the Internet and I think they would benefit both of you greatly. You sound like a very caring bunny owner and I think you should just give your rabbit a spay and a second chance

Ok thanks. And someone else is already supposed to get my rabbit tonight. So, how much vinegar do you use and how much water? The hutch is a 2 story one

That’s a shame I would still recommend sticking to only one bunny though due to the expenses. Males tend to be more cuddly thoughespecially after being neutered if that’s what you’re looking for
For the vinegar I usually do 1/4 cup of vinegar with 3/4 cups of water but I have a smaller cage so you may want to double or even triple that. Make sure to rinse it out thoroughly after though with water because if it smells like vinegar to you then it definitely will to your bunny

Ok thanks. And I will just put something over the hole in the tip part of the cage (where the ladder is) and make the hutch into 2 cages. One can stay in the top and the other in the bottom. Thanks!

If you can’t afford vet care for the rabbit you have now I really would like to stress that two rabbits will cost much more not only vet-wise but supplies and stuff will too. The smarter course of action in my opinion would be to only get one rabbit and use the money you want to out towards the second one, towards getting the one neutered and providing him with a better quality of life

I have extra money now that I can use for vet care And I was thinking about putting the hutch in our basement. We don’t have any carpet Down there so what could I put under the hutch? My parents don’t want bedding on the floor lol and I was gonna try to litter train them but still what can I use? Thanks again

I don’t have any additional information on y our situation, but it almost seems like you have so quickly given away your rabbit like it was on a whim. Again, i’m not judging here, but it would seem like that decision didn’t seem like a big deal which makes me wonder how things will be when you face a challenging or difficult situation. I’m not saying you’ll do this, but too many bunnies are given away because they are tired of caring for them or lose their interest. A lot of bunnies are received during the Easter holiday only to be abandoned quickly after. So it is a bit disheartening. But again, I don’t know your situation so I can only pray that this isn’t the case.

As far as your question goes. I have heard the opposite. I have heard that the best combination is a male and a female pair. That is not to say that your pair won’t get a long as anything is possible. I think the important thing is to get both males neutered due to hormones. I would imagine that even though they have been together for a while, once hormones kick in, they will display aggression and become territorial. So if you don’t get them neutered, I would imagine behavior issues between the two.

You can use vinegar and water to rid of the scent. Just make sure that the vinegar is gone. I would assume your hutch is made of wood? So make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned since it might absorb into the wood (i don’t know this just guessing on logic and basic physics).

Also, not sure where you live but basements can be quite cold. Rabbits can tolerate cold more than heat but make sure they are not freezing to death. Also, not sure if basements get hot in the summer but that is something to take into account when that season comes along

Litter training could be a problem if they aren’t fixed, although it is possible. There are lots of articles on it here on BinkyBunny. You could try putting outdoor carpet on the bottom (not the kind with looped threads), or linoleum (although most buns don’t like the feel of it) Personally I use cardboard and towels but that’s only temporary. You can probably find more info in the Housing section.
Also, have you considered adopting from your local SPCA or another shelter/rescue? If you really dont want your current bunny then a good deed you could do is rescue one. Plus they usually spay and neuter their animals amd make sure their health is pristine before adopting them out, and if you really want two, then you can adopt an already bonded pair, instead of going through the stress of doing that yourself

you can get carpeting down in the basement. If the basement is cold, concrete floor, you might thing about investing in some carpet. You can go and get carpet cut so you can put some patches of carpet there. You don’t need to cover the entire floor with carpet, but it would be nice to have some so that they can step and sleep on it. If you can’t get carpet, some blankets or fleece might be good just make sure they don’t ingest anything.

Finally, you might also considering some x pens to use and divide up the room rather than a hutch. My guess is that if they are in a basement, they’ll probably be out sporadically. You want them to get out and roam as much as they can so if they don’t have to be confined into a hutch, the better

Keep in mind that unneutered male bunnies have a tendency to spray urine everywhere, including on their humans!

May I ask why you are giving your rabbit away just to replace her with two new ones? You said previously that you have very little money to spend on vet care. Two rabbits will cost twice as much. Have you decided that you don’t want to pay for her spay and would be better off just to get rid of her? Have you told the new owners that she has to be spayed to prevent cancer? Are they willing and able to have her spayed?

As has already been said, two males will fight once they hit maturity, the facts that they are brothers and not in contact with a female has absolutely no meaning. Whoever told you that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Two neuters will cost much more than a spay, especially considering that you got a crazy good deal with $65 for a spay. Neutering my boy cost more than that. So, if you think replacing her with two males will save you money, you’re wrong.

I’m sad that you decided to dump your little girl just like that. You said previously that she’s “just a rabbit” and that you could find a new one anywhere, and it seems like you did just that. I’m sorry that you didn’t feel like you had a close enough bond with your bunny to keep her.
