        Hi there

I’m considering getting a friend for my rabbit, sometimes he looks very lonely and I am aware that rabbits prefer to be in pairs. I do know that I need to get him neutered before introducing a new (neutered) bunny friend.

The question is, should I get a doe to befriend my bunny? I understand males are harder to bond, is this true in your experiences? Are there any exceptions?

Also, before they are bonded they will be living in separate crates and rooms (until both neutered), should I be concerned about the two rabbits being able to smell each other? I really don’t want to put any stress on either bunnies….

I have read several rabbit books on bonding but I would like your opinions too… I understand bonding is a long process, but I think its important I know what sex to get before even considering buying him a new friend.

My bunny is roughly 12 weeks old, and is a mini lop buck

Bucks can be neutered as soon as there testicles descend, which may be ant time between now and the next month or two for your bunny. If you get another bunny, they will still need to be kept separate until bonded. The best all around solution would be to wait until 4 to six weeks after your boy is neutered and then go through a rescue or shelter and take him on “bunny dates” to let him pick his own new friend. This would not only take the spaying/neutering off of you, but would give you a better chance at a succesful and easier bonding experience and would give a homeless bunny a new forever home with a bonus new buddy.

Thank you JackRabbit, that’s great advice. I like the idea of “bunny dates”, letting my boy choose who he wants to befriend!
Hopefully as soon as he is neutered and recovered I can look at getting him this new friend. I will buy another dog crate, and once my boy is neutered I will be looking at adopting a second bun. I think he will love the extra company, I spend as much time with him as possible but obviously I can’t be with him 24/7 to play
