My rabbit just had surgery on his paw and the vet told me to give him yogurt to help him balance the flora in his stomach. I thought dairy was not good for rabbits and since my fiance picked him up after surgery, I was not able to talk to the vet about this. Should I give him the yogurt as the vet said or find something else?

        Thanks!

I THINK the yogurt is more for if they give him antibiotics. Is he on them? Even then you don’t HAVE to give it if there aren’t loose droppings. Is your bunny eating? If you do offer him yogurt, give yogurt that doesn’t have added sugar.

Megabunny- He is on antibiotics and he isn’t eating as much as normal, which I expected, but he is still eating pellets, hay, and greens. Do you think that as long as I monitor his droppings and they’re not loose, I do not need to give him the yogurt?

There are conflicting views on yogurt. Probably it would be ok as long as he did not eat too much. It is pretty much meant as a treat.
Have you looked into rabbit probiotics? You would probably have to order them online but the local pet store might have some.

I would agreed with that. Mine had no problems with his antibiotics, so yogurt wasn’t pushed. If you are worried about his intake, my big thing now is canned pumpkin. it’s great fiber and you can get him started by taking a piece of celery and putting some pumpkin on it (if he gives you attitude) and give him a taste of it. Typically, once they get a taste they are hooked. I wouldn’t go nuts with it, and I honestly don’t know if you can give too much…I haven’t ask my friend who got me going on pumpkin. But I’m trying to give her a break from me as she helped me a LOT when my guy was going through his surgery and she’s a pretty busy lady. Hope this helps

drwil- I was looking at the rabbit probiotics last night when I was doing some research. Is there a brand you recommend?

Megabunny- I’m not too worried about his intake. I figured the first day out of surgery he wouldn’t want as much. He ate all his pellets this morning and I woke up to him eating hay. The pumpkin is good idea though, I bet my bun would love that. Thank you for your help! I will just monitor him and make sure his droppings look fine.

Sounds good. I do advise keeping a can of pumpkin on hand for emergencies. Can be mixed with critical care, too

Do you have a Petco nearby? Some of them carry Bene-bac probiotics for small animals.

Probiotics may be helpful and there is anecdotal evidence as to the helpfulness of yoghurt, but I’d try to find some lactobacillus that are not in dairy. There are types that are sold as powders.

For rabbits there is a probiotic/fibre compound called Fibreplex that you can give rabbits on antibiotics or with runny stools for other reasons. I don’t know if it’s available in the USA. http://www.protexin.com/products/veterinary/rabbits/fibreplex-for-rabbits/26

It’s quite right that the right types of gut microbes are VITAL for a rabbit’s well-being.

JackRabbit- I have a Pet Supplies Plus and a PetSmart. Would they carry it? If not, I found some on Amazon.

bam- I think I won’t give him the yogurt unless I notice loose droppings. I think he should be okay, but I am going to find an alternative just in case.

Thank you all for your help!

I agree, a non-dairy probiotic would be the better choice. Rabbits really aren’t meant to eat dairy, so it would be better to get something like Benebac. I’m pretty sure Petsmart carries it.
