        Hi guyz,

I have been getting help from your forums for few months . I have a male white NZ who’s been with us for last 5 months.  As per what I have read about bunnies mine is a total angel  still have to get him neutered as he’s alone and cant get him partner without the procedure being done. So its scheduled next week and one question I wanted to ask was whether there should be any reduction of food before surgery or not.

        Thanks

Unlike dogs and cats you DO NOT fast a rabbit the night before.

You might even want to take some hay and some greens when you drop them off. I love NZW rabbits too.

don’t fast, don’t withhold any food, in fact, have your regular routine as normal

Just in case you weren’t aware, rabbits cannot vomit so there is no need to fast them like a cat or dog. It’s very important a bunnies digestive system is always moving. If a vet tells you to fast your bunny before surgery, it’s a red flag your vet is not rabbit savvy and should not perform surgery on a bunny!

I want to point out that you should only be wary in the VET says that. The receptionist at my vet’s office rattled off the whole fasting thing when I made the appointment for Wooly. A lot of times, the receptionist won’t know these things. Especially if the office treats all kinds of animals. Mine specializes in small/exotic animals and her partner specializes in birds/reptiles. They treat a lot of dogs and cats there though too because that’s what keeps them in business. LOL

Don’t Fast…………. In fact make sure your bun has a snack pack of his favourite goodies for before and after.

Thanks all , I also thought they didn’t need to fast. The VET wasn’t sure but that’s the safest I can get here. Other clinics I went were like
I can do but u can get a new one in that cost .
                    Neuter a rabbit , they are for meal….. !
here rabbits are very rare so hardly anyone available who has treated them, just hopping everything goes well .

Agree with everyone else….last week when mine was neutered; if I had listened to the receptionist he would have gone 2 days with no food or water. /facepalm

After I picked him up and had a talk with her she told me she didn’t actually know anything about rabbits and had just assumed….
Thank goodness for this site or my poor bun would have been in big trouble.

Here’s this if you want sourcing:
                      4. DO NOT FAST YOUR RABBIT PRIOR TO THE SURGICAL APPOINTMENT, even if the person scheduling your appointment tells you to do so. (Receptionists giving such instructions often recite the rules for dogs and cats, not realizing that the rules are different for rabbits.)

I know there’s never any guarantee, but being a male, I’m guessing you’ll be fine, as long as anesthesia goes well. Hope they have a good tech.
Do take hay and tell them to offer him it ASAP after surgery. Don’t keep him totally confined for a tremendous length of time. They might say to, similar to what they’d say for a dog. You want him to get out and about at least for a bit each day to help keep the gut working. Post surgical care is important too. Keep us posted

Well overall the environment of clinic looks good and they will be keeping him there for the day (not over night ) so hopefully things will go smoothly , will update tomorrow about how things go

Thankfully all went well , got Bugzy back from the Vet last evening and within an hour he started eating. spend the earlier hours just laying (understandable anesthesia effect) in his cage but latter on he has resumed moving things around the cage and even started rattling the cage in morning to be allowed out time . Usually he is out during the day time but I am not sure whether to let him out yet or wait a bit for healing ?

Wonderful news…. Can you limit his playspace with an Xpen for a few days to let the wound heal a bit?
