My female rabbit escape her pen and has been under the neighbors barn for a few weeks. I have been trying to catch her. I caught her once and she escaped again. I got a new cage so she wont be able to get out, but I think she was pregnant. I dont want the babies to die under the barn. I just caught her in a have a heart trap this morning. I had been treating her ears for mites, they were horrible poor bun.. I put some olive oil in it this morning, and got her in a cage. IF she had babies under the barn they are around 2-3 weeks old. I need advice on what to do, i cant get to them, and i dont want them to stave. Should i continue treating my rabbits ears and let her go back to her babies today? and catch her every couple days to treat her ears? I dont know what to do once the babies are big enough do you think i can catch them? PLEASE HELP!!

Why do you suspect babies under the barn? Can you see them?

You need to determine if there really are babies under your neighbor’s barn. Get some people with flashlights to give the place a good looking over. Even if there is just a small opening or openings under the barn, hopefully they will be able to see well enough under there to tell if there are babies. You could also try being very quiet and listen for movement under there. If you do see them, maybe someone can figure out a way to get them out.

Has your rabbit been to a vet to be treated for ear mites? I don’t think that olive oil will solve that problem. You would need to get medicine from the vet. You don’t want it to turn into an infection. That can be very serious for a rabbit.

Perhaps a rabbit rescue would be able to help in retrieving the babies. Or even one of those people who do humane animal/pest removal. They would probably have the equipment to get them out safely.

I think a quick vet visit is in order, firstly to get the mites treated properly and secondly to have the vet check to see if your bun is producing milk which would indicate that she had given birth. At three weeks the babies would be mobile and feeding about once maybe twice a day if you place your rabbit in a cage near which ever path she was taking in and out from under the barn and you are willing to stake it out for a few hours, the babies may head for Mummy for a feed.

Do you know where the rabbit was going in and out to get under the barn? Have you discussed this with your neighbor (the owner of the barn) about how you can access the underside to check it out? Are there some boards at the bottom that can be removed to gain access? If you believe that there are babies underneath, the only other option would be to call authorities/animal control, but they would do the same thing, remove boards to get to the underside.

Is your rabbit housed outdoors, or was she just outside in a pen playing when she escaped? If you keep her outside, please consider bringing her inside full-time. There are so many dangers present for pet rabbits that are housed outside.
