        Hi,

I’ve been trying to find some safe WSPs available in California (and at this time of the year). Home Depot did not seem to stock them at this time. I may stop by an Orchard’s Supply – what brand should I look out for? I am planning to make a trip to Lowe’s, which seems to have these brands:

        http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=87059-62268-777&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3506840&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Golden Fire – Looks okay..but to be safe I called the manufacturer and asked them if it’d be safe to for pets — ie what if pets ingest it. They seemed to be a little thrown off by that, and obviously said pets shouldn’t ingest it.

If not this brand, anyone have better luck with stores that sell horse bedding or safe WSPs in the San Francisco area?

        Thank you!

As long as their are no accelerants either would be fine.

Obviously the manufacturer cannot tell you if it’s safe if your rabbit ingests it since it’s not manufactured for litter but I doubt that they would ingest these…I’ve never had that problem.

Thank you! I figured..I also confirmed there are no accelerants in the Bear Mountain brands (sold at both Lowe’s and Orchards Supply). Will be buying some this weekend.

I’ve always gotten mine at Lowe’s… Speaking of which, I need to make a trip out there!

I would recommend that you buy as many bags as you think you’ll need for the entire year and store them sealed, somewhere dry. You can’t be guaranteed that they will have them in stock at different times of the year. I go once a year to the Lowe’s about 20 minutes away and buy bags and load up the car. For reference, I was using between 6-7 bags per year for two rabbits, now I’m using about 3-4 bags per year for one rabbit. It’s definitely worth the money for a year’s worth of litter!

As an update, I’ve started using the Orchards Supply version of the WSPs (from the same company, Bear Mountain), which seems to be working fine.

The pellets crumble when wet. Only question I have is – do they ever crumble when dry? I seem to see some crumbled when they appear dry..but assume that they may have been wet in the first place (I tried to crush them with my fingers when dry, and it seemed very difficult).

In short, yes! The pellets absorb liquid very well and when they are wetted, they get a dry, “sawdusty” look and feel. You can actually run your hand through the litter box (if you want to, lol!) and it’ll feel dry and crumbly when “used”.

If you have a litter scoop you can scoop out the soiled areas and add more pellets, or just dump the whole box.

If you later a section of newspaper underneath, that makes it really easy to clean. Just peel out the newspaper and dump.

Awesome, good to know! These are great! So much cheaper than regular cat litter and seems to work just as well, if not better.

I love them! It’s a silly thing to “love” but I do! I used to use pet store litter at over $20 a bag… I like $6 a bag MUCH BETTER! LOL!
