I have noticed that my 11 week old mini lop has been leaving a lot of cecotropes around lately, and makes a huge mess when he stands in them, and they smell really awful.

I will tell you a bit more about his diet, if anybody could give me any advice, I would be really grateful.

He is currently eating the Excel Burgess pellets, they recommend on the back of the pack to give him 60-80g, personally I think this is a lot but I have stuck to the instructions and gave him this amount daily.

He also has unlimited meadow hay and Excel Burgess chamomile herbage hay.

As for veggies I do not give him a lot but he does have a small amount of cabbage and the tiniest bit of carrot (as I am aware it is high in sugar).

What do you suggest? Should I cut down on the pellets? Or Veg? Or both

He is leaving almost all of his cecotropes

This is normal for young rabbits since they are on unlimited pellets and you do not want to change that at this age.

Those aren’t really the best veggies but they aren’t the cause. I would however start introducing some more appropriate greens – read this link and look at the list of veggies:

Make sure you read the article in full as it will dispel some myths about rabbits and certain greens.

Thank You so much for your advice, I’m glad to his this is normal for young rabbits! That is a huge weight off my mind

That list is very helpful, I will print it out and get him some different and more suitable veggies

I’m just worried he isn’t getting the healthy bacteria he needs due to him not eating his cecotropes, the majourity of his poop is just cecotropes
